Interesting article in the New York Times on Sandra Lee's "offensive" kwanzaa cake. I'll keep my opinions on Mrs. Lee to myself at this time for the sake of the holiday season. -- Happy Holidays!!! |

Watch her show once..she rubs them everywhere. Between that and her choking hazard cocktails, I'm repulsed. -- Happy Holidays!!! |

No need to get too riled up, people rarely understand another culture to pull off a food dish well. My dad was excited when the Chinese cook at a restaurant in Sweden told him he knew how to make saimin. My father got spaghetti in chicken soup instead. One man's saimin is another mans fail. Ms. Lee didn't even create this blatantly false celebration cake and therefore should only get 50% of the blame for presenting this to the world. My guess is that she assumed the creator had a little integrity. As it goes, we need people like Ms. Lee to make us regular cooks feel oh so good about ourselves - to die for our cooking sins - who the heck hasn't opened up a can of cream of mushroom soup? I dislike that salty gooey stuff as much as all ya'all but that didn't stop me from dumping it on some pork chops recently. |

I take it that the only reason that this pie was 'offensive' was
because it sucks? Or is this some medium-veiled race thing? -J |

When I read the title for this thread, my first thought was that she had made a cake in the image of Aunt Jemima. Turns out she just made a standard Sandra crap dessert. Mags, you said: "Her show is crap, her food is crap and she may be the most smarmy, annoying 'spokesperson' Ive ever seen." I have a hard time getting quite so exercised over her. To me, she's just one of a long list of ephemeral television mediocrities. |

True, but Food Network ****es me off sticking her in commercials in between shows. I like the Food Network, there are a couple of shows that are really fun to watch. She just rubs me completely the wrong way. She's completely phony and a fake and it is ridiculously apparent ...at least to me. |

And the chance of her one day becoming the first lady of the USA are greater than for all the other FM celebs combined. Mrs. Obama has her garden, and emphasis on fresh foods and nutrition. Sandra could one day bring Pillsbury biscuits and Cool Whip back to the White House. --Bryan |

Who'd be worse?? SL or Sarah Palin (SP)? I assume the latter since SP actually ran for the presidential republican nomation! TG she didn't win! SL as a potential 'first lady' would be far from ideal, but at least she wouldn't be in office as "Ms. President". Sky -- Ultra Ultimate Kitchen Rule - Use the Timer! When I first started reading here, I'd see the posts by Ubiquitous, and they were just so hysterical that I had to watch the show. I'd never seen her before. I get a laugh over the "voice over" comments because it's true! |

We're foodies on RFC. Consider that we don't understand why people go to McDonalds but there it is the worlds most popular restaurant by a huge margin. I get the demographics of it and I sympathize better with her audience than with McDonalds regulars. Maybe that should be I sympathize less poorly. > And her bubbly-fakey personality grates. Kwanzaa is an American secular holiday. She's a secular American. Fits okay for me. It's probably too much to think she likes jazz American music. That the cake blows, well, she does focus on the boxed stuff ... |

There are exactly three things on TV that I'm interested in, none of which we watch on TV. Mad Men and True Blood, on DVD when they come out, and South Park on the computer on Fridays. I might watch the Daily Show if it were on broadcast, and occasionally there's football. --Bryan |

But while you're already in the kitchen, surrounded by tools and all the equipment necessary to make real food... why not just cook for real? I don't mean something extravagant and impressive and stuff like some of these high-end tv chefs might do. But how about a lasagna, a salad, maybe a stew or some grilled pork chops and mashed potatoes. I haven't watched the food network but all of maybe 15 hours my whole life, but it seems like you've got Sandra Lee on one end, and gourmet chefs on the other end. Not a lot of middle ground. I know a $15 cookbook can teach you these things too, but give the lazy fux a chance? But I could be wrong. -J |

Once everybody is connected to everybody else on small handheld devices, there's going to be less time spent on the idiot box. The major problem, in my awesome opinion, is that we'll be bombarded with sales pitches at all waking hours. The end of the free internet is nigh. |

I look forward to "A Song Of Ice And Fire" and "Camelot" which will be starting this spring on HBO and Starz, respectively. I like some PBS programming as well...I dvr masterpiece theatre when it's on and I loved the new Sherlock series from the BBC. The rest has lately bored me. -- Happy Holidays!!! |

That's where we get DVDs of TV shows, new and old. Very occasionally, TVLand might have something like Beverly Hillbillies. Here's another jewel: http://movies.netflix.com/WiMovie/Th...eries/70107902 I never liked Dr. Who, but Camelot has the potential to be good. If it is, I'm sure I'll hear about it ad nauseum on Fresh Air, and then I'll wait for the DVDs. --Bryan |

There's last year's winner of The Next Food Network Star with her money saving home cooking. There's Down Home with the Neely's. There are the Deans. I don't think they fill the entire spectrum but they do sample the range between opening a can and having a tasting menu at a Michelen Star place. Add in Create on the public TV channels and The Cooking Channel and even more of the spectrum is covered. No one seems to have a show where all that's done is open cans and boxes. ;^) Not enough entertainment value in it without doing corny stories, light saber duels in the background, stripping newscasters or whatever. |

Most people would benefit. From what I've observed, the majority of home served meals are worse than fast food chains. Quite a bit worse. Large chains are scrutinized as far as ingredients go. They have to make ingredient lists public. The grocery store has a far higher percentage of garbage ingredients than most fast food outlets. > > Rachael Rae asserts that she's a cook not a chef. * Chef means the head honcho of a kitchen, right? Then there are assistant "chefs" in large operations, but all chefs are supervisors as well as being cooks. > > No one seems to have a show where all that's done is open cans and > boxes. ;^) *Not enough entertainment value in it without doing corny > stories, light saber duels in the background, stripping newscasters or > whatever. Um, you have stripping newscasters in your market? And I thought I wasn't missing anything not watching TV news. --Bryan |

Who cares about whether the cake is offensive or not? Everyone knows that Kwanzaa is a fake, racist holiday. |

My guess is she defines it in terms of educational preparation or formal apprenticeships. And I thought I > wasn't missing anything not watching TV news. There is/was a Russian news cast whose name translates to The Naked News. My spoken Russian isn't good enough to follow a newscast. When the show started the clothed parts were featured on a lot of talk shows. |

The problem is that the stuff she does with the food is worse than what was done to it at the factory that put it in the can to begin with... |

I went to Foodnetwork.com to see the Kwanzaa cake deal. It is there- I started it-- I'm not interested-- I went someplace else. It is that easy. Either there is no market for that show and it will fail-- or people will watch and it will succeed. Different strokes, and all that. Jim |

I do not know Ms. Lee, but I work with two of her relatives, as she is from this area (La Crosse, WI). Both these folks could cook her under the table, but they say she is very genuine in real life and likeable. Maybe it is her boobs that won her the show. Perhaps another talent. Aunt Jamima cake. Good one. I only get mad when she sues cans of things that are easy to make. How much effort is a good apple filling to make? Gotta like the drinks and tablescapes, though. Sad as the food is, that rack might add some flavor. I don't have boobs, so I just have to wonder. |
