I can make foods that cost much, much more if I have someone else make them. I can afford those foods more often if I make them myself. I'm betting that's the reason most here have learned to cook well. |

I've been having a lot of fun with it and don't repeat myself enough to feel like I'm in a rut. We ate out last night because I don't make Mexican food very often and we both came home slightly disappointed. It didn't taste as good as it usually would to us. We came to the conclusion that what I've been making at home has been really good so we're just spoiled. -- Today's mighty oak is just yesterday's nut that held its ground. |

Eating restaurant food daily will also wreck your health, because they use so much salt. That is so true, I'm glad you're doing your mom food blog because your kid will really appreciate it in a few years. Isn't that the truth? When you see them take a bite and do that little hesitation thing and then roll their eyes with pleasure! It's like they're having a food orgasm. That look gives me the best feeling there is in relation to food. |

I enjoy cooking, particularly cooking for dinner parties, cocktail parties, etc., where I can try my hand at new dishes. It's always fun to try a new dish that might push my skill set, for instance. I don't consider that I cook out of passion, much more out of survival... for the last 30 years or so very few eateries I've frequented, no matter how steep their price range, serve what I consider meals that are barely passable... I've gotten tired of wasting my time, money, and having my expectations of a good meal dashed by over priced crap presented slipshod by patronizing douchebags. Actually as I've gotten older I no longer cook so much because I like it, let alone passion... food has become a means to an end but I happen to like good food well prepared. I no longer like to cook so I cook as quickly as possible, yet still I take no short cuts that cause quality to suffer... I guess I've been cooking for so long that nowadays I cook out of instinct, I no longer need to think about it any more than how my automobile finds it's way home, how I can get to the terlit in the dark of night, pee, and return to bed, same as I can shave without a mirror. With age I now do a lot of things instinctively, I guess I've become my cats. |

Right, but that's a practical consideration for me, and while it's part of my passion for food, it's not as big a part of why I really enjoy and am passionate about it. I can make better food than most found in restaurants I could afford to eat in daily. Than any, really. I can't afford Michelin starred restaurants ever, white cloth and maitre d' seldom and I can if I take the trouble, cook at a very high level. That's because I never could afford to eat like that unless I mastered the craft. So I did. |

You're a very different sort of cook and eater than I am, and you really are very honest about your relationship with food. You're obviously not a supertaster, but you're very discriminating about ingredients. You very seldom *slum*, but often go somewhat over the top with combinations. I sometimes read your posts with fascination, though seldom with a desire to emulate. I do cook with passion, and am far more conservative in my choices of ingredients. It's not a hobby, but a part of maximizing pleasure for myself, family and sometimes friends. I almost never critique your *recipes* because I don't have the ability to even understand most of them. I do understand the crappy ingredient recipes I see, because I've been subjected to them. > > Bob --Bryan |
