Default Want to find clean, humane, sustainably raised, meat, pork and poultry?

Check out Eat Wild's directory. They have farms in your area
listed. So you know where your food comes from.

I checked the listings for my area and was astounded at how many small
producers there are who are bringing back clean, hormone free, pasture
raised meat, poultry and pork.

I recommend using direct referrals instead as I have burned twice by
local meat providers on their lists.

I am willing to pay a good price for good food. In one case I
bought/subscribed for half a lamb. All the cuts except for the ground
lamb were tough as shoe leather and tasteless. Seriously poor eating
quality.

I bought steaks at the other place. We had trouble cutting through
them - so much trouble, as a matter of fact, that it has become a
family joke.

I travel all over this as well as NY state, PA and CT looking for high
quality, sustainable foodstuffs. I certainly admit that I have led
myself astray at times by using online references such as the link
above.

I used a similar service to get a CSA subscription last year. The
deliveries stopped early in the season, we were promised refunds and
suddenly all emails bounced and the phone number was disconnected. I
got about $25 worth of veggies for $600.

These are places that have reps online, but I had no way of personally
verifying them.

Some day I'll tell you about the moldy butter or the blackberries that
were perfect on the top layer and gooey, fuzzy mush below. There was
the mildew-tasting shoe fly pie from the Amish road stand.

My sister in Michigan has much, much better luck than I, but she knows
her farmer-suppliers personally.

I have gotten wonderful goods at some places, though.

I must also say that I have found highly reputable farmers in this
state, too, but I no longer buy at these places without personal
references from those I trust,. I wind up feeling like I've been
hammered my a Nigerian scam most of the time and it isn't because I
have not been able to really discern anything from the physical exam
of the foods.

Sorry for all your mishaps.

I would use the site as a reference tool only. I found several that
were very close to me. They sell at our Farmers Market and I also
plan on visiting the farm personally. What I have bought from
those at the Farmers Market
has been wonderful.

Thanks...so am I. I find it really ticks me off when I go out of my
way to support local ag and wind up getting screwed.

All the places I mentioned save one, also sell at Farmers Markets.

My suspicion is raised by the fact that there were two producers quite close
to me, but neither one sells at our local Farmers' Markets.

In my area there is a meat producer called Whitehouse Meats.
(http://www.whitehousemeats.com/) They have "meat ups" where they sell
their meat, but it's usually just too far to go to buy meat so I wrote
and asked them if they'll have some meat-ups closer to me. I hope they
answer.
