Has any one tried these? The come to your house once or twice a month
and have a great selection. I have tried quite a few of the frozen
foods, ice cream, pies, veggies, fruits, entrees and appetizers, so
far have een impressed with everything.

They are a bit pricey, and of course seem to bre a little saltier than
I like. But will continue to use them.

I like them. It's convenient to have them come sometimes.

cost too much for what they are in the entree/dessert areas, but if you have
transportation issues and are careful some could be useful... i do like
their cherry ice cream and the DH likes the really chocolate one... haven't
had it in several years though...

in the interest of full disclosure, we are not in the habit of eating those
appetiezer things and pie is not often on the menu so we really aren't ones
to judge.

It's overpriced crap that is no better quality than the garbage they
have in the freezer section at the market.

I used to know a couple that kept both of their freezers well stocked
with Schwan's products. They both weighed well over 300 pounds.

But hey they do deliver <g>

They are not for us. Too much sodium and carbohydrates. I know people
who swear by their stuff, so I'm guessing it can't be all that bad.

There are some things they do/have that are labor savers. I appreciate
their shrimp tempura when I only want 4 or 6 for the 2 of us, and they
have a tasty mushroom/onion thing that makes a killer part of steak
Diane and saves me much time, which translates to less back pain at
the stovetop. When we have a yen for seafood, it's much easier to open
a frozen halibut then get in the car and go out to find one.

The convenience factor is real, and their stuff is not bad in terms of
quality. Now if you can find shrimp tempura or halibut filets next
door year round, then you don't need Shwann's.

They sounded perfectly awful to me. I will eat carbohydrates, but I
will not eat anything that tastes too salty. Why bother when there's
so much prepared food that doesn't go overboard like that?

Years ago when I was temporarily living in PA. I was in a little cottage
which did have a stove but you had to jump through hoops to use it. BIL was
afraid his daughter who was then a toddler might accidentally turn on a
burner. It was a gas stove. So he put some sort of on/off thingie
underneath the stove. Deep at the back of that drawer that opens. It was a
very old stove. To get it to work you had to crawl under there, turn on the
gas, then light the burner. The rule was if you did this, you had to crawl
back under and turn off the gas when you were done cooking. So... I opted
not to use the stove.

Instead I just used the fridge and microwave.

At the time, Schwans had a breakfast item that was like biscuits and gravy.
They no longer make it. It was very good. I tried their Pierogies. They
were okay but not as good as Mrs. T's. I also tried some sort of cheese
bread. That was about it. SIL did buy their ice cream but then there was a
big recall on it. I don't know the particulars because I don't eat ice
cream so it didn't concern me. SIL bought a lot of their stuff though
because she for the most part didn't cook.

They do frozen fruits and veg. Might be okay if you can't get out or get
any other delivery. Here there are two stores that deliver. Often they
waive the delivery fee and/or throw in free foods. I got a delivery once
when we were snowed in. They will no longer deliver in inclement weather.
Heh! But we got a whole free meal for four. Angela and I couldn't eat it
but my husband could.

Of the stuff that I tried, nothing tasted salty.

The salty thing may have to do with their prepared dishes, which I
generally do not buy. Their fish filets (breaded or not), steaks,
chicken portions and the like, I do not find objectionable. For
prepared entrees, I'd rather DIY/DIM. I do use their crab cakes and
breaded cod cakes from time to time, and I do not find them
excessively salty. De Gustibus, etc.

I've been buying from them for 3 or 4 years now. I don't usually buy
their prepared meals.
I like their vegetable and their aspargus is to die for. You don't
need to break off half of the stem.
You can eat the whole thing. I love the sweet potaoes. I also like
the blueberries. Their American
slice cheese is salty. I order from their web site and they deliver
once ever two weeks.

now thats a thought... one of the reasons we never got in the habit is
because our schedule is so unregular that anything like an every two week
delivery isn't doable... but if one could order once in a while and have it
delivered that might be nice for summer ice cream for the dh.

I just looked last night and it looks like Albertsons no longer delivers. I
don't know why. I liked it when I got that one order. The produce was all
fresh and good and nothing expired right away. I am just not home to take a
delivery all that often, it takes a long time to place an online order. And
I am near an Albertsons almost every day. So no need.

What I did was buy right from the truck. The guy said that wasn't the
typical way to do it but he carried extra. Worked for me!

the only reason i would like it if i could get deliveries is because its

I thought about deliveries way back when, but at the time I was working a
varied schedule and there was no way I could trust that the food would still
be good by the time I got home. I know they said they put it in a special
box or something.

I did get the milkman here for a while. Oddly enough we rarely got milk.
Angela very rarely drinks it. My husband pretty much only drinks it when
there are cookies, pastries or cake in the house and that's not often. Once
in a while he will go through a cereal phase. Mainly I got cottage cheese,
cheddar cheese and butter. They delivered the Alpen Rose brand and it's my
favorite. Thankfully that is what Winco carries so now I can get it again.
Anyway... I noticed if I didn't get it right away after he delivered it, it
would feel warm. So I'm not so sure that was the way to go. I stopped the
deliveries when we could no longer eat dairy. But now we can again.

that must be a real releif, especially since i am sure from what you posted
in the past you need the protien because you don't like many meats...

it must also make fixing certain food easier.

One of the reasons i haven't pursued the pricier options for delivery is
because of not being there to get it, that just doesn't strike me as
healthy... oh well, at least i know its out there in some areas. Lee

I don't like *any* meats but if I don't eat red meat twice a week, I go
anemic. So I have to eat it.

Not really.

Amazon now delivers here. I just haven't looked into the fresh food
delivery. Once in a while I get specialty items from them.

I do use shopping as a form of exercise. Even if I don't need to, I usually
walk up and down each aisle. We are going to Winco tomorrow. I think they
are at least as big as Costco. It's a LOT of walking even to get a few
things. My mom had problems in there and said her back was hurting from all
the walking. But it's worth it to me to save money.

Early afternoon every other Thusday is when they deliver here.
If I know I won't be home, then I pay for it with my credit card on
their web site.
I have one of their big freezer bags that I leave on my enclosed back
porch from him
to use if I'm not home. He also put's in a freezer pack to help keep
it frozen.
I've never had any problems with the food thawed. They have a nice
catalog with everything
they sell.

Our situation must be unusual. We're on a Schwann's route! AT least
once a month, on a preset Wednesday, the truck stops by (evening) and
takes/fills our order on the spot. And yes, the asparagus is a regular
buy for us.

How unusual must one be? I live at 8K ft in CO Rockies boonies and
see a Schwan truck often.

was talking to a DF about this. her daughter orders evry two weeks. they
sit down at the table with the driver, have coffee and go through the book,
i think he reminds them of upcoming events and events they have purchased
for in the past, he fills the order on the spot, Lee

I think the unusual thing is to buy straight from the truck and not have to
place the order early. When I lived in Edmonds they said the only way to
buy was to place the order early.

When I was in PA the guy said he wasn't supposed to sell from the truck but
that he would let me do it if he had extra. Perhaps they just tell everyone
that to make them feel like they are special?

My mom always liked Schwans stuff and ordered it regularly. I always
thought there was something slightly "off" about their food. Never
could put my finger on it though.

Before I hired a home health worker to help with my mother I considered
ordering from Schwan's. It was difficult for me to leave her alone (I was
afraid she'd fall) and the grocery store is a 20 mile trip. I've never
tried their food but if I hadn't found an agency who could send someone to
help out I'd have given them a try.
