It was .org from the get-go, i.e. ever since John Robinson (Levelwave) registered the domain in 2003, taking over the rfc part of Damsel's Edible Complex site. John paid for the registration out of his own pocket; the renewal fee was paid by a few rfc donors, IIRC. The .com part was added by Cathy when she took over the .org domain. The registration for both the .org and the .com domains has been paid by Cathy out of her own pocket ever since. Victor |

I wonder why they would keep org and not com? Com is automatic with me, and I have to think about org. Usually nonprofits have that extension. Is it less expensive to rent? -- Today's mighty oak is just yesterday's nut that held its ground. |

We didn't remember to make the annual renewal payment for the .com domain in time (the .org domain renewal was only due later this month) so the domain registrar we use "cut us off" <grin> Have just done the renewals for both, so no worries for another year ;-) Thanks to all for the many offers to help with the payments but it's really not necessary; it actually costs peanuts (that's the OBFood part)for the domain registration(s)and Jack hosts it on one of own servers. As for the surveys - if anybody has any in mind, I am only to happy to put them up; I just ran out of ideas myself... The webmaster (at) recfoodcooking (dot) com address will now work again too. -- Cheers Chatty Cathy |

When we took it over we thought we might as well register the .com address too - as a lot of people are more familiar with that naming convention for domains. Anyway, they both point to the same site so whichever one you prefer to use ends up in the same place (if I remember to pay for them in time, that is) <laugh>. -- Cheers Chatty Cathy |

Who do we complain to when a site gets into > our system and changes our bookmarks? A site cannot get into your system and change your bookmarks. What probably happened was that some maintenance team moved the site over to another server for load balancing purposes, and the DNS info took a while to propagate. When you do something like that, the DNS record gets changed by hand on the home DNS server. It then gets changed on every other server worldwide. This global change happens automatically, and is based on aging rules the systems administrator has set up on his DNS server. Every DNS server is different, and has different rules. The condition is aggravated by the fact that usually, different elements on a webpage reside on different servers. So everyone will experience different items missing, at different times. Almost every one of you is using a different DNS server, so you will get different results, until the thing stabilizes. It sometimes can take several days for the change to propagate. BTW: I never saw the placeholder. I got a blank page with a sidebar. The Chaotic Kitchen welcome screen didn't arrive until this morning. |

This is domain name hijacking. Some compaies are known to do this and warehouse the names for resale. Another rip-off was hosting providers would check to see if a domain name you submitted was available, then register that name themselves and claim it was taken. It got pretty slimey, there, for awhile, one of the well known hosting providers being accused. Then there's reverse hijacking, an old M$ and Apple Inc trick. You can google for details. nb |

They'll offer the domain for 10 or 15% discount. There's a limit to how much they can charge because I can always go through another service to register the domain. Of course, since the registration for recfoodcooking.com lapsed, anybody could have bought or "hijacked" the domain. OTOH, you're not going to be able to get much dough by doing this. If you were a bad person, you could try hijacking the domains of your business competitors by keeping tabs on when their domains expire in hopes that they'll forget to re-new and then put your own site up instead. That would be pretty nasty. :-) |

Most of them are just there to advertise cookbooks/recipe collection CDs that one has to pay for. Don't get me wrong, I'm not averse to paying for cookbooks/recipe collections, but when I'm having an 'all out of ideas' day and just want to surf the 'net quickly for something that looks interesting it's hard to find local recipes I haven't already tried. Heh, I usually end up trying something from other parts of the world - which often means having to substitute certain ingredients that are not available locally. -- Cheers Chatty Cathy |

My own fault entirely - as they do send us email reminders to renew - but life has been rather hectic here lately and I just put it on the round-tuit list... and by the time I did get a round-tuit, the credit card we use for on-line payment purposes had expired which meant we had to make time to pick up the new card from the bank, so it got put it on hold again... ya know how these things go.
