Join and go stealth. It's pretty easy to do: make all your settings
"Only Me", deselect all notifications, remove the Public Search option
and don't Friend anyone. Done. If I left anything out, someone will
chime in with it.

I'll wait to see further comments. Does FB keep changing the
privacy settings? I am leery because other online entities do
that, so even if you are set up for maximum privacy, that can
change without your knowledge.

They don't change anything you've already set, but they do add new
features occasionally so you have to stay informed. Why don't you
create a dummy account and enter only the minimum required
information, like a fake name? FB won't say "You aren't Mary Mixer so
you can't open an account". That way you can go stealth, join the
group you want to read and won't need to worry if you've kept up with
improved FB security settings or not. It's not like you're going to
be putting naked pictures of yourself on FB with your home address.
Either you're interested or you're not. If you are, there are people
here who can help you off line. If you're not, don't be a Julie.

I'm available off line any time, Jean! I dipped my toe in the
waters of FB after much fretting about it too.

Yes. And it's Zuckerberg's stated belief that everyone should be willing
to share everything online.

Yep, it happens on Facebook all the time. I still use Facebook, but if I
cared more about my privacy, I wouldn't. And the really bad thing is, if
I open up my own profile to an application, I'm opening up those of my
friends, as well, without their consent.

Well, it is Zuckerberg's idea that REALLY turns me off. That goes
for other entities who have the same thought. I think it's
hideous. I am a very private person, and I don't WANT to do any
such thing. From what I hear of cloud computing... when the day
comes that that is all there is, I will just start reading all of
the books in my library. Yuck.

Yer safe, so far. As long as you have a stand alone computer with a
hard drive (HDD), there's no need to get alarmed or sucked into that
cloud computing scam.

Now, the thing that will kill my internet participation is user based
billing (UBB). It's been in the wings for over 12 yrs, but "they"
have been waiting to spring it on us. Well, it's here, in abbreviated
form. Right now, it's jes based on total content per month with max
limits. Eventually, it will progress to fee-based billing for every
action. Every email, every link followed, every mouse click on the
net, will be billed. When that happens, my computers will become
planters and I'll take up gardening.

LOL! Oh, yes.... that was my reaction too: I survived... and nothing
bad happened (yes, I paid attention - with the help of certain posters
here).

Then you should stay with email.

That is an "interesting"POV. I spoke with someone today that
subscribes to Audible Books and of course she doesn't feel that way.

I'll actually be somewhat pleased if that ever happens (I doubt it
will), because if it cost even a penny an email to send spam, spam would
all but disappear.
