Went out to Schramm's Farm Market last week and picked up
2 pints of their fresh black raspberries. Took them home and sprinkled them with sugar. Ate a big bowlful drenched in heavy cream. Blissfulness! Black raspberries have got to be my favorite berry! Possibly my favorite fruit. I've been going there at least 20 years. I discovered them shortly after I moved back to Pittsburgh in 86. They have a large store now and a bakery attached. When I first started going there they didn't have the bakery but they sold Grandma Schramm's tarts at a little table in the produce store. I always buy the rhubarb tart. It used to be about 75 cents or maybe a dollar. I bought one last week and it is now $2.10. Worth it though. Grandma makes awesome pie crust. I don't usually by bakery pies or pies in restaurants if they have traditional pie crusts because they almost always really suck! (And usually the filling also sucks.) Anyway, Grandma's crust is as good as my own. And the rhubarb tart is awesome. I always buy one when I go there. I just wish they weren't so far away from me (~15 miles) or I'd go a lot more often. But I only get 15 mpg so it costs quite a bit to go there. I usually only go 2-3 times per summer. :-( I like to get their pitted sour cherries if I can afford it. They come in 10 lb. buckets. It's great not to have to pit them myself. Also I like to get a peck of concord grapes and make grape pie and grape freezer jam. They now grow seedless concords. How great is that? And I also like it that they still have old-fashioned watermelons with the seeds in them, those large oval-shaped ones. You pretty much can't get seeded watermelons anywhere anymore. I don't like the seedless ones very much. I love Schramm's.
