What's the best way to get some!?
I gotta watermelon. Not exactly thrilled about eating it, spitting out seeds, drooling juice like a tard, etc. I'd like to extract the juice and use it fer other things. Granitas, cocktails, pies, super soakers, etc. My question is, what's a good way to extract all that juice, using simple household kitchen implements? IOW, I got no juicer or steam powered wheat juice press or other bizarro vegan food freak implements. Ideas? nb |

I was about to post a question to *you* about how did you get the juice out of them. I did one yesterday- one of those basketballs. [still $5-6 in my neck of the woods-- and you've got to search for the good ones] 1/2 of it I cubed into 1/2" cubes to be mixed with mint and feta. The other 1/2 I cut into 1 1/2" spears and ran it through my Kitchenaid strainer in about 20 minutes. I ended up with 10 cups of juice and about a cup and a 1/2 of tasteless 'cellulose'. That sure beat my previous method of blender and colander-- I got a lot more juice this way-- and the waste was tasteless. It takes up a lot less room when it is juiced. Before we started with the mint & feta mix, I used to just cube them into 1" cubes and ate them with a fork. No drooling - and we buy seedless so no spitting. [well-- I usually buy *1* seeded one each season so I can practice my spittin'. Never know when that skill might be called upon] Jim > >nb |

I used to buy it in the store many years ago but have not been able to find it for at least 30 years. I don't know why it is no longer available. It was the best. At any rate.... .I prepared some simple syrup and cooled it. I cut up about a quarter of a melon removed as many seeds as possible and then pressed chunks of melon through a strainer. I mixed the juice extracted with the simple syrup and put it into my ice cream maker. It was delicious. |

I assume the suggestion of using the Kitchenaid with the appropriate accessory was not helpful. Probably no colander or juice bag either. Hmmm . . . cut into 1 inch chunks, place in bucket, and have a washed small child stomp the juice out of them. Be sure to instruct the child to force the juice through his or her toes to get maximum disintegration of the pulp. Remove child, strain pulp through fingers to remove rind and seeds, and decant. |

Yer even weirder than me, Jim. ![]() You've got to try it. I'm not a mint fan. I wouldn't have picked this 'recipe' but my daughter had it at a BBQ & brought some home. It works. Salt-mint-watermelon-- what more could you ask for on a hot day? To 4 cups of 1/2" cubes of watermelon- 12g of chopped mint leaves [about 1/2 cup]; 125g crumbled feta [about 1 cup]; 2 T olive oil. Toss- Best in a couple hours. VG next day. . . OK on day 3. I eat it on day 4. > > >> Kitchenaid strainer in about 20 minutes. I ended up with 10 cups > >Sounds perfect. Whatsa Kitchenaid strainer? It is an attachment for the attachment.<g> Goes on the meat grinder. They are often sold as a set-- If you don't have a Kitchenaid, I'd still take a look at that style-- like a grinder that forces the juice out through a strainer, and send pulp and seeds in another direction. I got mine for tomato sauce, but it is 'the way' for watermelon. Jim |

This one separates out the seeds and juices pretty nicely: Food Strainer and Sauce Maker |

Watermelon gets icky tasting very quickly when exposed to oxygen in the air, but people still put it in fruit salads. I dodged the watermelon cubes in my MIL's fruit salad this even, but got one piece. I ate it first, and it was predictably icky. I ordinarily avoid fruit salad, but the only icky thing was the watermelon, as she didn't put in bananas, which get icky even faster, and it had blueberries, and even better, blackberries. I'd rather drool "like a tard" than compromise on flavor. > > nb * * --Bryan |

Why do you think not? I bought one of those fridge sized warty melons from Walmart yesterday, gonna enjoy munching it outdoors so I can spit pits. |
