They're both laughing all the way to the bank.

I know little about Deen and could care less, but it seems Bourdain really
really needs to get over himself.

It's too darn bad that he essentially backs off in the last paragraph.
There are enough obese people in the US to continue to support her.
She makes everything greasy, fatty , dripping in butter, sugar,
mayonnaise and bacon a badge of good cooking.

Tony is about Tony. That's his schtick. He admits he was never much
more than a working chef, in the sense he payed his dues. His true
talent and love is writing, mostly about himself. Nothing wrong with
that. He's boring as a chef, but an interesting guy, most of the
time. Take him on that level. As for criticizing other cooks/chefs,
everyone does that. You gotta admit, the ones he targets are the same
one's we gleefully lampoon.

She has her sons on now demonstrating healthier food (and making fun
of her love of butter); so like Hackmatack says - she's crying all the
way to the bank.

I have a hard time taking that seriously. It's just 3 people covering
all the bases and giving lip service to being PC Sorry, they make me
feel really cynical.. I get such false vibes from her.

I used to enjoy listening to Paula while I was quilting. Her accent has
changed from softly Southern to raucous. Yes, she's probably laughing all
the way to the bank but I'm disappointed that she doesn't attempt to cook
healthy. Her body and that of her husband are proof that the indifference
is very likely to catch up with her. I did like her retort that 'maybe
somebody had peed in his cereal'. Polly

Tony is Tony. Sure, he is a bit full of himself, but he can also laugh at
himself. I kind of like his attitude in general.

One thing I can say for certain, I'd much rather have a beer with Tony than
Paul or her two sons.

I can't stand Tony, he comes across like a pompous ass. I don't like
most of what Paula cooks and she's way too loud, but it seems like she
has a good heart. I like her boys too.

I like Paula, or did, as I haven't seen her on tv in a few years (I just
don't watch tv anymore).

Bourdain kicks total ass though.
He speaks his mind and that's not allowed in todays PC world.

I'm sure Tony has tasted a few beers in his travels I can't get over
that exaggerated southern drawl Paula Deen puts on. I've lived in the
southern US most of my adult life and I've never heard anyone talk like
that. It's extremely annoying so I've never watched one of her cooking
shows.

If you have an upset stomach and want relief, just watch the Neely's and it
will make you puke. Can't stand watching them with their over the top
sweetness.

if i recall correctly, you've lived in two different places in the south
most of your adult life. that hardly makes you an expert on *all* southern
drawls. accents can change by quadrant in the same city, for god's sake.

Good point. As a matter of fact, I have a neighbor that sounds exactly
like Paula Deen.

But, as you may or may not know, Jill is an expert on almost everything.
Especially things that she has never experienced.

You don't have to watch one of her shows to see her on TV. She does promos
that air during other shows, She has been a guest on other shows. She had
done commercials. She has made public appearances Good grief.

If you listen to some of her old shows, she does not talk the same as she
does now. Exaggeration, IMO. Y'all check her out

I don't think Deen can be blamed for the decline of Smithfield products.
They were declining just fine before she was hired.

It depends on what you call the south, "pal". You want the Civil War
definition whereby Virginia was a southern state? I lived there, too. I've
also visited lots of other places in the southern US including Georgia,
North Carolina, Alabama and Texas. I don't claim to be an "expert" about
southern accents (that's your statement, not mine) but I do know a fake
accent when I hear one.

There are people in my family who sound very much like Paula Deen. She
may exaggerate her accent somewhat, y'all, but I believe it is real.
There was a young girl in church this morning named Destiny that sounds
just like Paula Deen (or my sister). Next time I see her, I will ask
her where she is from.

When I was a kid, I tried to get rid of my accent, but some of it has
stayed with me,especially when I am around my family. :-(

I lived in TN for two years. Some guy's accents were so pronounced, I
couldn't fully understand them when they talked. Worse, when I was
discharged and came home to CA, some of my friends asked why I was
speaking with a Southern accent. Yikes!! It's contagious.

I'm no expert here, since I've never been to the "south" (never spent
more than a little while east of California and Washington states, and
spent all of three days in Dallas, Texas, the farthest east I've ever
been), but her accent sounds fake to me. What bothers me is that she
didn't used to have that accent! Now, it could be that she had that
accent growing up, and lost it (to some degree) before getting on tv,
and now has it back, but, to me, it still just sounds "forced".

Bourdain's not the only one who needs to get over themselves.

I used to deal with a lot of American truck drivers and there were a
number of them who simply could not understand. It is interesting to
see how people pick up accents. I had some good friends who moved to
Texas about 30 years ago. She picked up the accent but he didn't. He was
hard of hearing. When my son was 19 he went to Uganda to work, He came
back for a month after 4 months and then went back for another 4 months.
On his return he called me from London and I was surprised to hear his
accent. He had been hanging out with South Africans and had picked up
their accent. It was gone within a week of his return.

Yep. I lost mine within weeks.

In the service, you meet ppl from everywhere. Once, we were sitting
around discussing accents. One guy said I must be from CA. I'd never
told anyone. I asked him how he knew, as I had no accent. He said
that's how he knew.

Californians have no accent, they have a certain syntax... you know,
like, airhead.

We don't doubt she has a southern accent, but it has gotten stronger and
more exaggerated over the years. Thus, the annoyance

I moved from Philadelphia to Ct 30 years ago. Every once in a while someone
asks, "your not from around here are you?" Every region has some
differences in speech.

He's a nutcase. Most dangerous in the US? No one is forced to cook her
recipes.

And they both win with the increased publicity.

I never knew her before she was on the air-- but there is a good
chance that all of her advisors advised her to lose the accent if she
wanted to make it in the 'big time'.

Millions are spent every year teaching southerners [and probably
NYers] to speak "American Broadcast English".

Maybe once she 'made it' she said screw them and went back to her
*real* accent.

When we moved to TN one of my brothers purposefully put on a southern accent
to try to fit in. That didn't really work. It just sounded stupid I
guess it makes a difference what part of TN you were in. The folks in
Chattanooga sound markedly different from the folks on the western side.

I can't say the ppl with the most heavy accents were from TN, but I
noticed most ppl in the military and stationed in the South were
originally from the South. It was like no one from outside the South
ever wanted to be stationed there, so there was no competition to
Southerners who did. One good ol' boy had such a heavy accent, even
other Southerners kidded him.

That's the great part about accents! It lets others know (in general)
where you're from. How bland it would be if everyone sounded the
same. Of course, I turn on subtitles whenever I can because although
I enjoy accents - I don't enjoy replaying a movie scene over and over
to figure out what was said (particularly true with Brit and Aus
movies).

Speaking of accents... Netflix "Culloden". It's filmed in the "You
Are There" (hosted by Walter Cronkite) style. If you don't subscribe
to Netflix and are interested, there's a short synopsis of the film
and you can watch pieces here
