Whole tomatoes vs Crushed
I have a chili recipe that calls for using canned whole tomatoes, but asks
you to break them up with your hand before adding them in. I already have a few cans of crushed tomatoes on hand. Any big deal to use those instead?? -- Ray Remove NO and SPAM to reply |
Most cans of crushed tomatoes I've used seem more like puree, but I don't
think they would hurt. You just wouldn't have any chunks of tomatoes in your chili, which I personally like. Most often crushed tomatoes are packed in tomato puree, whole tomatoes are most often in puree too. ---= BOYCOTT FRANCE (belgium) GERMANY--SPAIN =--- ---= Move UNITED NATIONS To Paris =--- ********* "Life would be devoid of all meaning were it without tribulation." I like to use the "diced" tomatoes. They do not have as much liquid as the
crushed, and they work great in chili. Whole tomatoes you have to cut up, and I do not do as good as job as the machines do in dicing. Tom |

I usually start with diced and use the stick blender on them while still in the can. Canned crushed tomatoes are quite thick, IME, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. -- -Barb, <www.jamlady.eboard.com> Updated 10-22-04; Popovers!.
