I'm surprised no one has mentioned this yet, but...on The Great Food
Truck Race, the Denver episode, the teams are sent out to forage for wild mushrooms to prepare a dish for a judge. There's no discussion of how dangerous it is to hunt mushroms if you don't have experience. There's no disclaimer that some expert checked the mushrooms for the teams. One of the obviously inexperienced team members simply says, "I go to the store and buy them. I just hope they're not poisonous." Come on, Food Network! How irresponsible can you be? I was thinking the same thing. No way would I eat anything any of those folk gathered unless I was sure they were experienced mushroom hunters *in that area*. There is an old saw about mushroom hunters- There are old mushroom hunters, and there are bold mushroomers. But there are no old *and* bold mushroomers. There are loads of delicious mushrooms growing in the wild. But there are also enough deadly ones to make it a very dangerous game for the unwary. Jim |

They were on the grounds of a place that has mushrooms commercially and they had an expert right there. If you lived in a neighborhood that had trees and/or grass, it was up to your parents to tell you not to pick the mushrooms. You should know that by the time you are 10 to 12 years old. Perhaps before the trucks start out on the next leg of the journey, they should be reminded to stop at red lights and obey all traffic signs. |
