Default FoodNetwork-Mushroom Foraging

I'm surprised no one has mentioned this yet, but...on The Great Food
Truck Race, the Denver episode, the teams are sent out to forage for
wild mushrooms to prepare a dish for a judge.

There's no discussion of how dangerous it is to hunt mushroms if you
don't have experience. There's no disclaimer that some expert checked
the mushrooms for the teams. One of the obviously inexperienced team
members simply says, "I go to the store and buy them. I just hope
they're not poisonous."

Come on, Food Network! How irresponsible can you be?

I very rarely watch foodnetwork, but saw a bit about that episode on
some news show about 'reality' shows. I was thinking the same
thing. No way would I eat anything any of those folk gathered
unless I was sure they were experienced mushroom hunters *in that
area*.

There is an old saw about mushroom hunters- There are old mushroom
hunters, and there are bold mushroomers. But there are no old *and*
bold mushroomers.

There are loads of delicious mushrooms growing in the wild. But
there are also enough deadly ones to make it a very dangerous game for
the unwary.

I remember going on a mushroom gathering hike with colleagues at NIH and
a well known expert. When we got back we had a long session separating
out the poisonous from the edible but only the expert and one or two
others had the nerve to take any home.

I didn't see that show, but I agree with your sentiment.

The expert was the chef that sampled the dishes

Does everything have to have a disclaimer? They were on the grounds of a
place that has mushrooms commercially and they had an expert right there.
If you lived in a neighborhood that had trees and/or grass, it was up to
your parents to tell you not to pick the mushrooms. You should know that by
the time you are 10 to 12 years old.

Perhaps before the trucks start out on the next leg of the journey, they
should be reminded to stop at red lights and obey all traffic signs.
