My sister came to visit Seattle for the first time this week. She lives
in my hometown in upstate NY. At first I was worried that we were not going to find anything for her to eat (she doesn't do fish, seafood, or Asian food, and is quite picky about everything else), but we showed her a good time. Some of the highlights, food-wise: Costco and Central Market in Edmonds and Shoreline, respectively. The sample ladies were out in force at Costco. Both SO and Sister had their fill. Uwajimaya. Unfortunately, there were no geoducks at which to gawk. More unfortunately, Sister found the Hello Kitty section of the store. Fortunately, her 3-year-old grandchild who's a Hello Kitty freak already had much of the stuff. In a "hell freezes over" moment, she tried a sample of a red bean bun at the deli department and declared it good. The girl may be coming around... Pike Place Market, of course. We got there before many of the non-food vendors arrived. She got to see the fish chuckers, World Spice, Spanish Table, De Laurenti, and Paris Grocery. Penzey's. She'd been to the one in Grand Central Station before, so this wasn't a new experience. The Paradise Inn at Mt. Rainier National Park. After a long drive around the park and a couple of short hikes, we settled in for dinner. She enjoyed the buffalo meat loaf. The Friday Night Follies. Every year the SO and I have a spiedie fest for our neighborhood group. Even though it was Labor Day weekend, we had a large crowd (nearly 20) to munch on lamb and chicken. She returned to NY this morning a few pounds heavier, but happy. I expect to see the rest of the family out here before too long on the basis of her recommendations. Cindy -- C.J. Send her up here and I can take her on a Costco tour and see if they are much different from the other Costcos. > |

Pappardelle's Pasta isn't there anymore? I liked that 10x better than the fish throwing when I visited Pike Place. -- I take life with a grain of salt, a slice of lemon and a shot of tequila |

There's a Central Market in Edmonds? Where? I only know of PCC. I grew up in Edmonds! There *is* one in Mill Creek. > > Uwajimaya. Unfortunately, there were no geoducks at which to gawk. My daughter loves the Sanrio place at 99 Ranch Market in Edmonds. She has never been to Uwajimaya. My husband has no interest in driving her there. And I hate driving in that area. <snip> |

Negotiating the layout takes some work (probably so they can sell more spices ;-), but the staff is very friendly. Cindy -- C.J. Fuller Delete the obvious to email me |
