Default Kitchen Mistakes

My latest: I wanted to make egg salad. I brought the eggs to a
boil, then covered the pot. I forgot to turn off the heat. The
eggs boiled hard for about ten minutes. I chopped them extra fine
and used extra mayonnaise to make up for the rubberiness. The egg
salad was edible, but not great.

What's your latest?

Making peanut brittle for my grandkids a couple of days ago, and putting it
on wax paper. What could I have been thinking!

I usually put it on a sheet pan that's been slightly buttered, or parchment
paper. Oh lord, the wax paper was a mess, and I did know better, but still
did it. I had the kids pulling off the bits of wax paper, it kept them busy.

Making multiple batches of 3 different kinds of cookies, followed by a
peach pie. Completely forgot the last batch of almond butter cookies
were still in the oven when I cranked the heat up to 450°F in
preparation for the pie. Caught it just as the cookies turned
inedible.

Well, I was cleaning the dishes.......... then the wife says to feed
the cat. Then the phone rang. In my haste and confusion, I cleaned the
cat and fed the garbage disposal unit. On the upside, our pet food
bill has dropped dramatically.

I incinerated a waffle the other day while busy eating the previous one.
I expect that's a pretty common occurrence for most folks.

I did the same thing only the water boiled out. My wife was laid up in bed
and I put some eggs on the stove and went in the bedroom to be with her.
Shortly after, she asked 'what is that popping noise?". It was not until I
heard the second egg explode did I remember them.

You clever and crafty woman! That's one way to keep them busy with no
complaints. They knew what the payoff would be.

This isn't my mistake, but it sure is funny. One of the apprentices
working in a hotel in a smallish Canadian city, was outside, at his
parents home, grilling on their deck. Now I think what happened is
that the curtains billowed out onto the deck, and caught fire off the
grill. He burned his parent's house down. LOL.

I ate most of it. Should have saved it and sliced it very thin and used
in fajitas or something.

I'm too cheap to have thrown it away. <vbg>

Yeah. I'm a sick **** and I totally fail to find the humor in burning down
a house.
Now if he had burned his face off while putting the fire out... That would
be funny.

That reminds of another goof up. A few years back, I wanted steak for
dinner and they were not defrosted. No big deal, that is what the microwave
does so well. I pushed the wrong buttons and instead of just defrosting,
the steaks cooked through. A beautiful shade of grey.

The dog enjoyed dinner, my wife and I went out for sandwiches.

call me sensitive but i find that in no way funny, you have no idea the pain
of something like a housefire causes, and the guilt he must feel to be added
to it, how sad you find that even the least bit amusing, Lee

Angela really wants one of those. Our kitchen is just too small for one.

its not that big in a general sort of way, when not in use ours sits on top
of an almost regular sized frig, sorta apartment sized... it does some
things just ok but does others excellently, my only complaint is that it
only goes up to 350 deg f and mine is a couple years old so not sure if
that has been changed or not. I do know the new models have a reheat
feature and some nice things... it does anything that needs to be crispy
excellent, bakes crisps and pie things excellent, meat is aobove average to
excellent, and baked potatoes and snack sorts of things really are great, i
would say something about pizza but the brand we bought to try it with was
so nasty i am having a dover on that particular item,... chicken skin is
crispy and bs breasts are nicely browned yet cooked fast enough to not be
dry.

i think the small baking pan i use in it is 9 by 9 and is 13 inches across
the diagonal so the base might be 16 inches, and even better than all that,
all the accessories fit inside it to store, and talk about easy to clean,
just wonderful,

I overcooked beautiful salmon filets day before yesterday. The DW swore
they were wonderful but they weren't. The coleslaw was good, and the
fresh lemon juice partially covered up my sin.

Ahhh that is a lovely wife) I bet she enjoyed them anyway because you had
cooked them

I would dispute the term "mistake". The eggs were reasonably hardboiled
not excessively. I used to "simmer" for 10 minutes, tho' now I put the
eggs in cold water, bring to a boil, turn off the heat and let sit for
20 minutes. It's possible that your preference in egg salad calls for
eggs in which the yolk has just set but that's not mine.
