Summer is a terrific time to eat only raw foods, cleanse the body, eat
healthy and lose some weight. Don't forget get to eat nuts and seeds with the fresh fruits and vegetables. Great time to eat sunflower seeds right from the sunflower, pick one and enjoy the abundance of nature! |

Yeah, full of creepy crawlies or were sprayed with poison... some years I grow mammoth sunflowers and the bluejays get them all, they seem to enjoy the extra protein. Anyone tells me they buy organic sunflower seeds I tell them they are full of doodoo. Didja know that birds can't eat sunflower seeds while they're growing on the plant... they can't get to them., the flowers grow facing the ground... they need to wait until the end of the season when the plants fall over. Bluejays are the masters of sunflower seed eating. |

Squirrels work as a team. One squirrel climbs the stalk to gnaw the stem just below the flower. When it falls to the ground the other squirrels gnaw it into pieces and haul the pieces off. Janet US |

On sunny days, sunflowers are not facing >the ground. They follow the sun. Obviously you've never grown sunflowers or seen then growing. Once the seeds begin to form the flowers become too heavy to straighten up... the flower head follows the sun but the flower still faces down. http://i52.tinypic.com/2luxys.jpg http://i53.tinypic.com/2ccxopv.jpg http://i53.tinypic.com/s4youv.jpg http://i51.tinypic.com/35cjyhx.jpg |

On sunny days, sunflowers are not facing > the ground. They follow the sun. I mis-read this subject as 'cleansing raw food'. Saw a grim report somewhere recently about the gross number of germs on slices of lemon offered at restaurants since they're probably not washed. Don't know if the National Safety Council has reported the statistics. Which leads me to the question - what do you use to clean fruit/vegetables that you eat raw? Clorox seems a bit overkill and a quick rinse in cold water probably isn't really effective. Polly |

I've seen them work on those trunks. I've also seen them climb the stem and sort of swing on it to tip the plant. With the plant on the ground several squirrels will work on the stem. That only works for less sturdy sunflowers. Janet US |
