Maybe I'm just old fashioned, but that just doesn't seem right.

Times are tough, but they aren't that tough. You couldn't pay me
enough to do that.

I love cooking with wine.
Sometimes I even put it in the food.

Isn't that common in Japan? Or am I thinking of some other country? I know
I have read about making a soup of it.

It's been happening for ages. It's especially popular with vegetarians as they
don't consider it to be meat

They do consider it to be meat. It's the only meat that doesn't result
in the death of an animal.

Me either-- but it isn't a 'new' thing. A friend had his children
at home 25 or so years ago because none of the local hospitals would
let them keep the placenta.

At the same time that I couldn't be paid enough to eat placenta--
there are lots of animal parts that are more gross that I *would* eat
'just because'. But human parts/products kind of leave me cold.

the press loves nothing better than bogus 'trends.' no numbers, no
details, few facts, just breathless 'reporting.' jack shafer loves 'em:

Actually, maybe you *aren't* old fashioned! It's a pretty old concept.
We went to a wedding about a year ago. One of the photographers was
very pregnant. She was concerned that she would go into labor right
then and there. She brought her doula (birth assistant). The birth was
going to be in a hospital, and not one close to the wedding, so I think
a main function of the doula was to drive her to the hospital. The
photographer was pretty busy, but we talked to the doula quite a bit
(the wedding started much later than even most weddings). She was going
to be in charge of processing the placenta, and told us much more than I
really wanted to know.

Not all vegetarians will eat it, even so.

This is not a new practice. Midwives used to feed it to new mothers, as it
helps shrink the uterus after childbirth and start lactation.

I don't believe your justification for this primitive idea.

A few years ago there was some publicity about the fact that the
placenta contained stem cells and the potential benefits to be had from
them could be of great use to the mother, particularly if the mother had
any illness of physical defects. I don't think that it would be of use
to eat the placenta though, the stem cells need extracting in a laboratory.
