From a Hickory tree. Seriously. I don't recall ever seeing hickory nuts in
stores... You may need to call upon some friends and see if any of them are
growing them. When I lived outside of St. Louis, Mo., I had a hickory, a
pecan, and a black walnut tree in my yard.

Thank you,
What nut "nearly" tastes like a hickory? All I can think of is hickory
wood for the barbee.

If you can't find them by name in the market, look for
filberts. Same thing exactly. This is the time of
year for nuts int he shell inthe markets.

Have you ever tried to crack enough hickory nuts for a cake? I remember
as a child trying to crack them with a hammer. It was very
difficult-lots of work for very little product.

A hickory nut resembles a very tiny English walnut, but the flavor's not
the same. Still, it's probably about as close as you'll get.

Apparently they're very closely related to the pecan, but "smaller in size
and more flavorful":

Good luck

I've never had a hickory nut cake before, but there's nothing like fudge or
divinity made with hickory nuts. My grandparents had two hickory nut trees on
their farm so there was always plenty. My uncle owns the farm now so we can
still get hickory nuts as soon as they fall from the trees.

Years ago, a television commercial for Grape-Nuts featured
living-off-the-land savant Euell Gibbons, who declared, "Its taste reminds
me of wild hickory nuts."

So maybe Grape-Nuts would do. But probably not. :-)

You must not be getting good hickory nuts then. I'm not saying they're better
the pecans, I love pecans too, but I've never heard hickory nuts described as
rancid. It sounds like you're getting the taste of the outer fruit.

Filberts = Hazelnuts, not hickory nuts.

Our area has a large "farmer's market/roadside fruit stand" type of
deal which is the only place I've ever seen shelled hickory nuts
around here - they're plentiful in the timbered areas around...you can
find them in the shell at supermarkets at this time of year.

Filberts (aka hazelnuts) are NOT at all the same as hickory nuts.
Hickory nuts come from hickory trees, which are in the walnut family;
filberts are from European hazel trees.

I don't know about the similarity in taste, since they both put me in
the hospital because of my allergy.

You can buy wild hickory meats from American Spoon foods. I've gotten
mine there for years and they are very good, but not cheap.

I'm completely willing to pay though. Grew up with hickory trees and as
a kid tried to get enough meats to make a cake. I think it was like 1/2
cup. Took days. The nuts are sooo hard to crack with just a hammer.
