That's all fine 'n' good advice, and I appreciate your feedback,
BUT....I came to this group to discuss cooking, as that's what I
understood the group to be about. correct me if I'm wrong? I did NOT
join in and post, to be ridiculed and made fun of, called horrible names
and bashed, as Brooklyn1 (and a couple others) have done repeatedly, and
I will NOT tolerate such behavior. I shouldn't have to, but I also will
not stand by quietly and be talked to that way, so if they want to play
those "games" and personally attack me, they are not going to get away
with it! I don't find it amusing in the least, and there is no reason
that I should have to put up with it. I did not start anything, but I
refuse to tolerate abuse without fighting back.

i am not sure how your unit works but if it has filters/kill file functions

Good. While we all tend to get off topic, that is the basis for being here.
I've learned a lot from others,. my main reason to be here.

Hooray for you, tough guy. How does it feel to be dragged down to the
lowest common denominator so easily?

If you are smart enough to figure out who the goof-balls are, why aren't
you smart enough to kill file them... or ignore them? No, you like the
battle and you begin to add just as much "noise" to the newsgroup as the
people you are fighting.

Is what some anonymous stranger says on a newsgroup important to you?
Someone you've never met and will probably never meet. Someone you
don't give a rat's ass about? What these people write is important to you?

Enjoy the good, ignore the doofuses. Don't become a part of the problem.

Oh... and I'll take a swipe at some of the doofuses every now and then
just because it is fun.... but I do it on my terms, not theirs.

I was going to give you a lecture, but a couple of other people have
already. Besides, nobody likes lectures! I remembered something I've
read on the groups before, which says it all:

Don't wrestle with pigs. You'll get dirty, they always win and they
actually *enjoy* it!

Hi George!

First off, I made my first post in here just little over 2 weeks ago,
and there was only two people I knew (from another group we're in and
they are great women) so I'm still trying to get to "know" all the
regular posters in here and enjoy discussing cooking tips and sharing
recipes (I was thrilled when I discovered the group) and I never
expected any nasty people in such a group, calling others horrible names
and putting them down, as I have seen, and must say, I was shocked that
about four of them turned on me immediately. I started nothing, and it
hurt me that they personally attacked me just for no reason.

I use the newsreader on my WebTV for all discussion groups, except for
one, and I do go through Google on my computer to access that group. I
can read posts through Google on WebTV, but am not able to post there
from this newsreader, unfortunately. Anyway, my point is, I'm also not
able to killfile on this newsreader, but I think it is rather pointless
to killfile, as those people's posts will show up in other people's
posts anyway, so you are going to read what they have to say eventually,
so what's the use of killfiling? It's best to ignore the obnoxious
posters, but first one has to figure out just WHO the trouble-makers
are, and it's not that easy for a newcomer, but there are obviously
several that aren't about to spread out the "welcome mat" for anyone new
coming to the group.

I had built up a pretty good killfile but when my computer crashed, for
some reason, the file didn't transfer into the new machine. I'm pretty
good about skipping the people I don't want to read so it isn't a big
deal.

The only one in the new killfile right now is someone who continually
top-posts. Nothing against her content, but the style of posting just
screws me up when I am trying to go through stuff quickly and since she
is fairly prolific, it is a minor aggravation that I can easily avoid.

We have a certain poster, that I guess you've filtered out, who turns
every thread into something no one wants to read. He's picking on
Judy now.

Then everyone who is sick to death of this from the past 20 years will
killfile you, too, since that will be the only road to avoiding them and
their poison.

But it's possible to get back out at least some of those killfiles by
posting brilliantly every now and then. I mean, isn't that why you don't
currently have *me* killfiled?

I've been in and out of quite a few killfiles, and it doesn't bother me a
whit when people killfile me: Killfiling is the Usenet equivalent of
sticking your fingers in your ears and shouting "LA-LA-LA-LA-LA-I-CAN'T-
HEAR-YOU!" It's not MY loss when someone chooses to disable themselves in
that way. I cheerfully admit (as I always have in the past) that some people
are better off not reading what I write. In March I wrote this:

| It doesn't bother me to be in anybody's killfile. Lord knows I don't mince
| words, and some people are poor at handling the stress they feel when they
| read some of the things I write. For those people, ignorance might not be
| bliss, exactly, but it's a lot better than enlightenment."

ObFood: Reading _Bones_ by Jennifer McLagan, I ran across the recipe I've
already decided to make for Easter next year: Lamb neck with dill, peas, and
lettuce. It's a brothy dish and is served in wide bowls, meaning now I have
to craft a menu which will not result in each diner having his or her own
constellation of plates and bowls.

How do you like that book?
I have her newest book on my wish list: Odd Bits, I think it is
called. I already have her book, Fat, and I really like it.

I like it a lot. _Fat_ didn't have as much to interest me, and I think that
_Odd Bits_ will be even less interesting, since nearly all the theme
ingredients are difficult to find.

I have a similar complaint about _The Complete Robuchon_: Sure, there are
*some* recipes in the book which don't call for ingredients I can't get. But
the entire seafood chapter is worthless to me, since every single dish
centers around some sea-creature which is only found in Mediterranean (or
rarely, Atlantic) waters.

You might consider a two-part filtering process: I download headers and mark
for reading those which are *candidates* for my perusal. Then I download the
messages themselves and BEFORE READING ANY OF THEM apply a second set of
filters which marks as read all posts which contain obnoxious phrases like
(for example), "Andy wrote".

I dug my Bones out and it's marked as an "uncorrected proof not for
sale." It came from a resale store and was probably a buck. I've
never seen a book marked that way.
