A new vodka I just tried
 

Pricier than Sheldon's Crystal Palace, the stuff is called Boru, and
it was on sale for $8.97/750ml. I'm certainly no conno-sewer of
vodka, but <$12 vodkas always have an off taste. This was more along
the lines of Svedka, SKYY, Absolut, or 3 Olives, but at a far cheaper
price. It's on sale for a few more days, so I'm going to get some
more. Eleven days until no more beer, and I'm using up odds and
ends right now, not planning on buying more, except for one box of
good beer to say goodbye to my favorite carby adult beverage.

I left Finlandia out of my list of comparable, mid-priced brands, but
it belonged there. I never drink any vodka neat, nor do I take cold
shots. Mixed, this Boru stuff was as clean as Finlandia. Sheldon
maintains that really cheap vodka is just as good as the mid-priced
brands when mixed, but I disagree. The mid-priced brands really are
pretty interchangeable in cocktails because they really are neutral.
$9 was a real bargain for a *fifth* of decent vodka.

Thanks, I googled it because I'd never heard of Boru (or 3 Olives for
that matter) and the price was double. So check out the price at
BevMo or whatever liquor store is nearby and if it's really a discount
for your area - stock up!

There is no way anyone can tell which vodka is in a mixed drink...
waste your money, see if I care. People who use top shelf booze for
mixed drinks are idiots. Order a bloody mary or a screwdriver with
top shelf vodka and the bar tenders are laughing at you.

Back in the days I lived in the college dorms about 1976-7 before the
fall of the Berlin wall we tried a blind taste testing of vodkas. This
was done by college students not training specialists but I'm never
going to be a trained specialist when it comes to vodka so the results
were good enough for my purposes.

We tried 3 top shelf vodkas. Absolute, Finlandia and Stoli straight
from the Soviet Union with the label in Cyrillic. I didn't know of any
other top shelf brands at the time. We tried 3 discount brands Popov,
Kamchatka and a discount version of Smirnoff. We put all of the bottles
in the freezer over night and marked rows of shot glasses with letters.
Someone filled the shot glasses randomly in a room out of site. It
turned out no one could identify any of the top shelf vodkas by brand,
no one could tell the discount vodkas by brand and only half could tell
the top shelf ones from the discount ones.

My conclusion - If you find a top shelf quality vodka on sale for the
price of a discount brand buy it on the spot. Pour it into an empty
Absolute bottle. Keep it in the freezer. Chances are no one will be
able to tell it's not Absolute. As long as you could tell it was top
shelf quality that's all that will be needed for the vast majority of
the population.

You know they make zero carb beer, right? It comes in concentrated
form. Just add water to return it to normal beer strength. Like all
substitutes it's not really the same as the original but I know plenty
of people who have developed a taste for the zero carb form of beer.

I'd hardly classify vodka as a delivery vehicle. Bad vodka, at its
worst, is undrinkable. Good vodka, at its best, is flavorless. A
"delivery vehicle" should arrive on its own. Vodka arrives on a tow

I think you'll find that vodka isn't a replacement
for beer, just as nicotine patches aren't a replacement

Since I was mostly buying the cheap, crappy "delivery vehicle," (Old
Milwaukee) I don't miss that much at all. I will miss the nice
American (Cascade hopped) Pale Ales.

I'm 64 and have been drinking beer since my late teens. About a
year ago I started getting sick after only a few, a vague sort of
nausea mixed with a vague feeling of needing to take a crap but not
being able to do either. I experimented a bit by trying different
brands and even trying different stores thinking it might be old
beer. Nothing worked. My last effort resulted in the same vague
disgusting feeling coming on after only one beer. So I switched to
vodka for good. I don't get the same feeling from vodka as I do from
beer. Maybe it's the volume. Maybe it's the carbonation. Maybe it's
some ingredient I'm suddenly allergic to. Or maybe it's creeping
cancer of the pancreas or liver or some other growth slowing the flow
of the heady brew through my system.

I drink only one or maybe two nights a week in a very anal
fashion. I use the clock, trying to take a shot once every 45 minutes
at the most, although I sometimes lose control and start slugging
direct from the bottle. But I've been pretty good with the routine, I
must say. Anyway, about vodka, I have tried some expensive types, and
I too am no conno-sewer, but I go with this stuff called Burnett's. I
get a fifth and throw a half pint down the drain so I'll be left with
only 12 shots. It's worth it. Anyway, I've tried some of the more
expensive stuff and I swear to God I don't think there's such a thing
as good vodka. Maybe good in the sense that it's easier on one's
body, but not in the sense of taste. It all makes me cringe, and in a
way maybe that's good because it keeps me from slugging away as one
might with mixed drinks. I bought one airplane bottle of some
expensive stuff made from grapes and I thought it was actually harsher
than the Burnetts. I'm so anal I've already got my drinking date on
calendar for Tuesday or Wednesday of this upcoming week. Thanks for

If there is such a thing as good vodka, which I'm assuming on the
basis of other people's opinions there is, although I have yet to
taste it. I don't mix the vodka. If I did I'd drink it too fast.
Been there, done that. But what I do when I take my shot is this. I
take a slug into my throat but don't completely swallow. In the
meantime I've opened a quart bottle of gatorade and from that I take a
sip and flush the vodka and the gade down as one unit. It doesn't
have to be gatorade, any kind of juice will do. But that's how I do
it. It takes away the cringe but doesn't make it so easy that I might
be tempted to slug the whole bottle down in too little time and awake
the next day with a brutal hangover. That is why when I buy a fifth I
toss 4 shots down the drain. Sounds like a waste of money, but the
stuff is so cheap that it's worth it in other more important ways.

I'm serious too. When I was younger I thought it might be cool
to see a shrink once a week just for the fun of it but I never had the
cash for such frivolity. I don't think my anal drinking method is
sick, I think it makes sense. It works for me. As a cab driver for
33 years I can tell you personally that as bad as I have made things
for myself over the years, there are others out there who have done a
far worse job. You might be one of those people. Who knows? Maybe a
shrink could tell us, they seem to know everything. .............

Well it would seem to me vodka (good ones, anyway) have very few
cogeners (that is, non-ethanol low-molecular weight compounds such
as aldehydes, ketones, or other alcohols), whereas perhaps some cogener
common to beer is no longer being metabolized correctly by your system.
Could be a warning sign to slow down just a bit.

Just one suggestion: have you checked out the price for pints? A fifth
is basically 1.5 pints, so if you are discarding a half pint, you are
left with a pint.

Absolutely. I have had my problems with drinking over the years
and have had many brutal hangovers, some of them landing me in the
emergency room. I know about cogeners because all my life I've been
searching for ways to either eliminate or at least reduce the
hangover. I even invented my own form of light beer designed to help
me nurse myself off a hangover. I did this 30 some years ago. At
that time they had no non-alcohol beers other than one called Near
Beer that was made in Texas, at least as far as I know. With a
hangover I'd buy a six pack of the non-alcohol beer and a six pack of
regular beer and mix them. I heard a long time ago that vodka is the
purest drink with the least cogeners. I knew that but didn't want to
get into drinking hard liquor. But now I only drink one or two days a
week, so I can handle it. Thanks for your post, I believe you're on
the mark with your diagnosis, or at least close to it.

Thanks for the kind words. Let me tell you how I do it. I bought
a cheap half-pint of whiskey just because I liked the glass bottle. I
took the label off. I did this about a year ago, maybe more. I keep
it in the fridge. When I get a fifth or a pint, I pour what I can
into the half pint bottle and take my sips from there - 4 shots to the
half pint. I beg to differ with you however, and I'm not looking to
argue, but when I get a fifth I can get 4 half pints out of it minus
maybe one shot. Sometimes I'll buy a pint plus a few $1.00 airplane
bottles to take me to about 10 shots, enough to do the job but not
enough to give me a devastating hangover. I get 4 half pints from a
fifth. 4 half pints equals 2 pints. As for the money, the stuff is
so cheap anyway that I'm really not losing much pouring it down the
drain. If I don't do that I'll drink it and maybe regret it the next
day. Anyway, from one fifth I always get 4 half pints minus maybe one
shot, so you're really not losing much getting the fifth. And I know
they're not really pints but are labeled by millimeter or whatever.
But I know that from each half pint I get 4 good shots because the
bottle is clear glass and I actually use my finger to mark each shot
although I can tell by feel alone. Thanks for your post and trying to
be helpful. I also smoke weed. I was always more of a drinker than a
pot head, but now I think if someone put a gun to my head and said I
had to choose one of the two, I think I'd go with the pot.

I'm assuming you are in the US, as am I. What I realized after I sent
the last post, is that fifths and pints of hard liquor haven't been sold
in the US for many years. They now have a bewildering variety of sizes,
all in milliliters. I suspect that if you look at that "half pint", it
will say 200ml, so yes, you would get almost four of them out of a
"fifth", which is actually 750ml.

But I'm just guessing.

No one believes me, but I hate to argue. Why won't they believe
me? No really, I don't think we're arguing, not me anyway, just
trying to make a point. I'm not a measurement expert, but I know how
many regulated slugs I get per half pint - 4. Yeah, they come in
milliliters. I don't know the system, but most alcohol stores have a
conversion chart. I think a fifth is like 26 ounces, maybe only 25,
while a quart is 32. I'm just going by sight with my own bottles and
my own slugging system, and I'm just guessing too. But my guess on
this one is educated to some degree because I'm pretty much a
measuring man when it comes to drinking and a lot of other things. I
am very anal in some ways although I don't like the word. I prefer to
use careful or cautious or even conscientious rather than anal.
Without so-called anal types such as myself there would be no routine,
just a bunch of loonies running around doing frantic and unpredictable
things with no regard to anyone other than themselves. Yet we the
anal are the ones who are ridiculed. Is this fair?
