I thought of him today, too. For me that is when the world started to

I was very young when he died and have no memory other than the "image"
of JFK. That said, we went to Arlington two weeks ago on our D.C.
layover and visited his grave. It is a very moving memorial.

I was a young married mother when he died. It was all over our tvs and I
remember the utter shock!

I remember exactly where I was when JFK was shot. My father was stationed
at Quantico and we lived in Woodbridge, VA. My mother got a phone call and
came downstairs crying. She said, "Turn on the television". I remember it
well. I was only three years old at the time. Some things just stick with
you.

I remember being in my classroom in Gr. 8 and the school principal came
in and told us what had happened.

We were all quite sure that WW III was going to start within the next
few days. Everyone was quite sure that the Soviets were responsible. I
guess we were too naive to realize that it was more likely the work of
the mob and/or the Cuban expat (not to be distinguished from the mob).

I was also in Quantico that day, Marine OCS, and early afternoon
we were at a bombing range watching a demonstration of close air
support. A plane had just finished a bomb run that dumped a huge
incendiary napalm bomb on its target about a mile in front of us.

.... Then a colonel walked up to the podium and said "Gentlemen,
I am very sorry to announce ..."

You mean President Eisenhower's silly plan to invade Cuba and
kill a lot of Cubans so that Batista could be reinstalled as president
and continue to keep his heel on the throat of the Cubans who
didn't worship the US-backed very rich industrialists and developers
and mafiosi who bankrolled Batista's brutalities?

They're probably sad; as sad as the many dead Cubans would have
been if that plan had been allowed to run its course.

The same here. I stopped feeling safe that day.

Today is also the birthday of my eldest child. She is 41 and I'm hardly
old enough to have a child of that age :-)

It was ill-fated whichever way it turned out. I admire JFK for having
had the courage to see how bad it would be and to stop it, but
I can appreciate, as you noted, how bad it was for those in the
middle of the thing. Should never have been planned, for sure.
