Regarding a recent mention here of someone on the tube using a crock pot
insert stove top to brown meat: I was leafing through the October 2011 issue of Good Housekeeping and stumbled on to their reviews of "Super Slow Cookers". The West Bend 6 quart model # 84966, mslp $80 is described by GH thusly: "The compact West Bend may be a godsend to anyone with a small kitchen. As a slow-cooker, it simmers nicely on low heat, producing a moist roast. The dishwasher safe nonstick pot can be used on the stove or in the oven, and the base doubles as a griddle and warming tray." |

I think we ALL remember those first apts. Mine had counter space of about 10 linear inches somewhere between the small stove and single sink. |
