Yuck. I love ketchup on any kind of fried potatoes but not on
mashed or baked. I had a co-worker years ago who used to gross
us out a meal time by ordering mashed potatoes from the restaurant
down the street and then mix it her own ketchup. It would be bad
enough to just put it on top and then eat it but mixing it in is
really gross. When it was my turn to go out to pick up our
dinner order I would refuse to get hers if she ordered mashed potatoes. ;-)

I've only made Colcannon with lightly cooked cabbage, never meat, but
it's quite good. By the way, it's called Rumbldethumps in Scotland.

Thanks :-)

I've added a new 'dimension' to the mashed spuds, by using a stick blender
to whizz 'em up. Prior to this we've gone through the 'rustic' stage with
textured mashed spuds with small chunks in them, to mashed spuds with the
skin left on and mooshed in...... and we're now on the silky smooth wagon
:-)

I could easily put mustard inside a baked potato.

Perhaps putting ketchup on mashed potatoes is like putting ketchup on a hot
dog.

Like a pumpkin souffle?

Or with a cake mixture.

Pudding here has a couple meanings........ Christmas pudding which is a
dense cakey typ of thing, and (eg)chocolate pudding, which can be either a
sauce with a cake top, or just a chocolate custard (firm set)type.

Default Fried Yucca/cassava [was; Tomato sauce on mashed potatoes]

gregz > wrote:

Not potato, but last week I fried yucca balls- and drizzled some with
a panela syrup.

This is one of those things that is as easy and simple as a PB&J - but
if someone hadn't written the 'recipe' down, I never would have
experienced some great food.

Boil the yucca- mash it- roll it into balls and fry in 350F oil.

For 'tater-tot-like' goodness we preferred the balls about 1" in
diameter [2tsp]-- I used the #40 [1 1/2T] portioner for the larger
balls that I then drizzled a panela syrup over.

They were best warm.

It was supposed to be a creamy pudding, but it came out more like
squash--even after adding cups of whipped cream to it.

Yeah, good! Unlike mustard. I would never put mustard on a hot dog!
Horrors!!!

I always use ketchup, sweet pickle relish, and onions on my hot dogs
(unless it's a chili dog or sauerkraut). At least I used to. Lately I
tend toward Thai sweet chilli sauce. Yum!

Chuckle. When I first moved to Chicago metro I tried a Chicago hot dog.
Hated it. Posted on chi.eats about the experience. Actually selling a
boiled hot dog to a paying customer is crazy to me. The response was
"You're not from around here, are you?" That's right. Just moved at
the time. Ah well, I've since enjoyed a vast variety of excellent
Chicago food. Just very few hot dogs. When I go to a hot dog place
(other than Hot Dougs) I tend to get a burger. The local burgers are
excellent (everywhere, but that does include Chicago).

A joke based on my impression of Chicago dogs -

Q - Why don't they offer ketchup for the hot dogs in Chicago?

A - Because hot dogs taste better with ketchup.

Tomato based flavoring goes well on meat. Witness meatballs and
primavera sauce. Styles of chilli that use tomato. Seemingly half of
all Mexican restaurant dishes. What's ketchup other than a low quality
tomato condiment that had sugar added to make it appeal to small
children? What's a hot dog but a low quality meat product designed to
reduce the total amount of flavor to make them appeal to small
children? Clearly what flavor hot dogs have is improved with ketchup.
Improved more with mustard? Sure. But Chicago is a place that puts on
hot dogs some stuff that looks like kryponite that tastes slightly sour
and nasty. Clearly they won't have something that improves the flavor
of their dogs. That might start to compete with the superior pizza or
excellent "italian" beef or many other wonderful local foods. Foods
other than their hot dogs that is ...

LOL! Chicago ppl would hate your for that comment and using ketchup on
hotdogs too.

I use mustard, relish, and onions, ketchup sometimes and chili....some combo
of those. With the Oscar Meyer beef franks, I'll sometime just eat them
plain on a fresh bun or bread. They are greasy but have a great taste, imo.

I've learned to stop buying the annoying hot dog buns. They always split on
the fold while eating if you put lots of toppings. Now, I use hamburger
buns. Take one hot dog, cut it in half, then spit those halves. Those 4
pieces fit perfectly on a hamburger bun that won't fall apart on you.
That's tonights dinner, in fact.

That sounds worth trying. I like Thai food. And brand name?

Mustard is probably the most commonly used condiment for hot dogs. Are
you really that dense?

You're a nasty swine.

Hate me all you want! I do not care. I like ketchup on my hotdogs!!!!
I like mustard for certain uses. I mustard with cheese and crackers.
If I eat some sort of sausage that is not on a bun, just on the plate,
I like to cut off pieced and dip them in mustard. But once you put it
on a bun then no mustard, just ketchup or something.

I always buy Hebrew National. In fact I'm having some tonight for
dinner. I bought the bratwurst rather than the plain hotdogs because
the regular hotdogs are too skinny and they come in an odd number. The
bratwurst has 4 nice fat sausages in a package so I bought 2 packages
and one package of 8 rolls. I like when it comes out even. I think
they should enact a law that hotdogs and buns should come in equal
quantities!!!!!

Yeah, but they don't taste the same on a hamburger bun. I've tried it.
They only taste right on a good hotdog bun. I just don't pull the bun
apart too far - just barely enough to get the dog in and then pile the
toppings on top. If you get good bakery buns that aren't already cut
then you can control how deep a cut you make.

It's Mae Ploy.

Yeah, I don't like Chicago-style hotdogs either. I don't like
most of the toppings they put on is why.

Chicagoans could care less if people use ketchup but we will judge you
and assume you have the palate of a five year old. kate makes and
eats the same thing 7-10 days in a row so I wouldn't take her tastes
seriously.

Just buy a better quality bun. We have S.Rosen here and they don't
split.

I like Mae Ploy and most Asian sauces but on a hot dog it sounds
disgusting. Someone was talking about a hot dog stir fry so I tried
it a few years ago. It was so nasty I could eat it.

For me the ketchup is too sweet. I eat hot sausage with tomato based sauce,
and peppers. It's different than ketchup. A local hot dog shop, has a
special sauce. It's creamy, light brown, a bit sour. Nothing like I'm
familiar with. It's popular.
