Good for you! I could have enjoyed my first TJ's shopping trip last
month, were it not for the fact I chose to go to the wrong one. I live
near the Palm Springs, CA area, and when visiting my doctor or the
needle work shop I go to I'd not yet found time to go to the TJ's I
should have. The two stores are in neighboring towns about a 15 minute
drive apart. The one I went to was a surprise find when I did have the
time, and it was poorly stocked and a downright mess inside. I told a
TJ frequenting work friend about it, and she assured me that the "other"
one is definately the superior one.

The one I went to did have one lonely container of baby gouda that I was
glad to find for an experiment, somewhat. I wanted to try out the
storage method I learned here, the one telling to simply change the
storage water weekly to keep the cheese freshest. Works wonderfully,
thank you!

If you have a sweet tooth, you'll be in heaven.
Their dark chocolate covered coffee (espresso?)
beans are delicious. They have 10 lb slabs of
Ghirardelli chocolate, smaller bars of imported
chocolate, yummy cookies, good frozen blintzes
(both cheese and vegetarian), all kinds of
dried fruit and nuts, different crackers than
you'll find in the typical supermarket, decent
cheeses, interesting sauces, pastas and grains.
Wine prices and selection are good as well as
imported and microbrew beers.

The thing I miss most about our daughter's family
moving to Colorado from the San DIego area is not
being able to go to TJ's, Ikea, and the farmers'
markets.

Trader Joe's

Sat, Oct 30, 2004, 8:33pm dognospam@adjfkdla;not (Dog3) WROTE:
Our 1st Trader Joe's had the grand opening on Friday. It is not too far
from my house. I've seen the store mentioned in threads in the past.
What do the people that shop there think about it? I'm leafing through
their Grand Opening brochure and they have what looks to be some very
decent items. Except the 60% brie. It does not sound so good to me. The
prices look pretty good too. Not low but not as high as Straub's. I
think I'm going to mosey over there tomorrow and have a look-see.
Michael ---------------------------------------------------------------
response: Trader Joe's just opened near me few weeks ago.
After hearing about this store online I was excited to visit to buy
low carb low fat snacks for between my meals - am diabetic- and low
carb cereal without paying the Atkin prices.
Can't begin to tell you how dissappointed I was with this store.
1. not diabetic friendly
2. only a few low carb items
3. cold cereals was a joke
4. prices? our local heath food store has lower on their organic
products. and we always thought they were high.
Been better off to visit a low carb warehouse store 45 min.'s from me.

Michael,

Perhaps the grand opening might take you and your shopping list by
surprise. It could be a time of store inventory adjustment for awhile.

If you do go, give them the benefit of the doubt, and make requests.

The official website has product availability by region, broken down
into all the food criterias that may help you and your shopping list.
The store also has the same infosheets for the taking.

I'm totally thrilled with Trader Joe's.

Hope you will be too!

Andy

We have one near where we rent DVD's. I don't go there often, but
usually can get some good buys when I do. Last week I got a 24-oz. box
of Barbara's cereal for less than what the local markets charge for a
16-oz. box of same. If you can buy wine in supermarkets in MO, you can
stock up on 2-buck Chuck (Charles Shaw wines). Here in Seattle it's
3-buck Chuck, but still a bargain. My main gripe with TJ's is that you
can't buy a single green pepper; you have to buy produce in their
packages.

The one thing you have to remember is that TJs is not a regular
supermarket. If you go in expecting to find things as they are in a
regular supermarket, then you will be very disapointed.
Yes, they do have a lot of things that regular supermarkets have, but
a lot that they don't have. I don't as a rule go there to buy
produce or meat, as I can generally find what I want elswwhere. But
occasionally they have something I want, if I am at the point where I
absolutely need it.
That being said, they do have some good deals, and selections
sometimes.
As I have been traveling around the country, I have tried out the
various TJs. I first experienced them in California, where they were
born and bred. When I went to one of the in Gaithersburg MD, I was
surprised to find that the cottage cheese I loved from other TJs, was
obtained locally, and was not the cottage cheese I had from other
stores: it was narsty! Same with some other products. But then
again, in some of the frozen good they carried, I couldn't find the
same back in California, and I wish that the California stores carried
them.
So what one person talks about getting from TJs on the east coast, vs
what someone talks about getting on the west coast, may be entirely
different.
They all seem to carry the wonderful chocolate bars from Belgium.
Sometimes the fruit and nut selections differ...What I can routinely
find in a California store is not as available the farther east you
go: it seems more limited than what California stores offer. But it
is still a good value, I think.
I tend to buy butter from them, and they usually carry Plugra at
really good prices. If they have the Trader Joes brand of Kalamata
olive oil, that is also very good.
Their wine selections are usually pretty good as well, although I
noticed the selection changing from east to west. On the east coast,
there was much more European wine available, and it was a good value.
On the west coast, in California, the California wines predominate.
In Arizona, I noticed that the selection of California wines was much
less, and not as great a variety.

So, go there with an open mind, and try some things. I am sure
everyone has their favorites. I usually buy Greek yoghurt from them,
as well as the butter. They have been producing a good Greek Style
yogurt as well, which I think is really good. Their little bottle of
balsamic vinegar is generally a fair value...as is some of their olive
oils. I see these in most of the stores.

Some places, the cheeses are good, some places they are bad. I do buy
some of the goat cheeses though, and have liked them.

Anyway, have a good time exploring! Let us know what you find out that
you like!

go: it seems more limited than what California stores offer. But it
is still a good value, I think.

Let us know what you find out that
you like!

Christine

Check the ingredients on the side panel. Half the bottles will say
blackberry on the front but turn out to be apple and grape juice with
added blackberry flavor (whatever that is). I think TJ also carries a
pure blackberry juice. I don't remember.

I do all of my gourmet shopping at TJ's. I feel that they have fantastic
quality at lower prices than the supermarkets. I also buy most of my
vegetables there. If you are into organic they have that as well. I
personally don't care much about that but as I say, there is that option. I
can find most of the esoteric foods that I need in my cooking. There eggs
are also wonderful. The Jumbo are nice and large and sometimes even have the
two yokes in them. I also buy my Jasmine and Bastmati rice there. I could go
on and on. Try it, I'm sure you'll love it once you're familiar with all the
items.

60% Brie is sublime! Once you try it, you won't look back.
I absolutely love their cheese selection (and cheese
prices).

You'll find their milk, egg and OJ prices are great! Their
vegetables are organic, so they'll be higher than grocery
store prices. They even have refrigerated pizza dough!

I've gotten into the habit of buying my all EVOO and
balsamic from them. Great quality, flavor and a low price -
especially when it's the TJ brand.

Recipe -
buy all ingredients at TJ's.

Granola, Fruit Parfait

Greek Yogurt
Granola cereal
1 bag of frozen mixed berries (thawed slightly)

Layer and eat.

YUM!

For the most part, I agree. Unfortunately, I recently had to return two
pkgs of blue cheese that were just ...well.. off! This after buying this
particular item regularly for over 2 years. The good news, there was no
hesitation on the part of the store.

There are things that Trader Joes has that are superior to the supermarket,
either in price or quality. There are things that you can get at TJ's that
you can't get at the supermarket, and there are things I would never buy
there, for various reasons.

There are some things I always shop there for b/c I know they have the best
combination of price and quality (comparable quality elsewhere is more
expensive....or you get better quality at TJ's for the same supermarket
price).

Examples of this sort of thing a
All nuts and dried fruits.
They have the best assortment of both and the prices are fair and
reasonable. I have become addicted to dried fruit and nuts in oatmeal and I
pick up dried fruits mixtures that are already chopped up perfectly for my
breakfast, for the same price per pound as the whole dried fruits at the
market. Less work for me, and they are not in self-serve bins, where
someone's dirty fingers could have been. This is a win/win for me.
Same for the nuts. I had no idea there were so many ways to buy almonds!
Blanched, raw, toasted, roasted in olive oil from the mediterranean, salted,
unsalted, seasoned, sliced, slivered, chopped, whole, etc! And combinations
of the above, in some cases! And no one beats their walnuts. $3.49 a pound,
which is half the price of Diamond walnuts at the market, and you can get
the halves (which are big and delicious) or chopped.

Their balsamic vinegar is very good. They have 3-4 different ages....and the
price goes up the older you go. The $3 is the youngest, and for the price,
it's better than stuff I've paid twice that in the supermarket. I've done
side by side comparisons...TJ's cheap balsamico beats anyone else's cheap
balsamico, hands down.

Their olive oil, on the other hand, is iffy. I have bought their own brand
and something called "Santini". My problem with their olive oil is that
sometimes it's rancid when you buy it. Sometimes it doesn't take long to
turn rancid. The good news is, they take things back without hesitation, so
if you get a bad bottle, you haven't lost anything but the time it takes to
bring it back. I have learned to taste a drop of olive oil before adding it
to other food.

Their cheese department is not cheap. But the prices are better than the
supermarket. They do not have a lot of depth, however. They might have
gruyere today, but not next week. I like a Swedish Fontina that I get there
once in awhile, but they don't always have it. Their Reggianito from
Argentina is a step up from the US made parmesan cheese, and it's about 1/3
the price of Parmagiano Reggiano, and it's almost as good. Their cheese
department is definitely worth a look, and most definitely worth going there
before going elsewhere.

Their frozen veggies are very good! Prices are lower than Green Giant or
Birdseye at the market and they really taste closer to fresh than either of
those brands. The broccoli florets are outstanding! They have things I've
never seen elsewhe a couple different mushroom medleys. frozen
artichokes, a choice of thick or thin asparagus, frozen soybeans, lots of
different things. Organic frozen veggies, too, if that matters to you.

Their frozen desserts are truly outstanding, both in taste and value. Lots
of choices. You'd expect to pay more for stuff that tastes and looks this
good.

What I really love TJs for, besides their dried fruit and nuts, is what I
call their "antipasto" aisle. They have all sorts of jars of
"stuff"....olives, marinated mushrooms, peppers, etc, red pepper and
eggplant spread, various tapenades, all manner of yummy things that can be
arranged in bowls platter with crackers or toasts (which they have a nice
variety of) and you have a party without a lot of fuss.

The stuff I don't buy there are their meats and produce. The fresh fruit
and veggies are pre-packaged and you can't select the items or quantity. The
packages are generally too big for my one-person household. YMMV, of course.
Their meats--to me the prices are too high for pre-packaged meat. For what
they charge, I can buy meat from an actual meat-market, and i know it's
fresh and it's been cut just for me. I dunno, i prefer to buy meat where I
know there is high turnover. That's just me, though. They do have meats
frozen....I've never bought them b/c the chicken breasts have solution
added, and I prefer not to buy that. Same with some of the lamb
products...i'm fussy with meat.

I have had mixed results with milk there. Sometimes it's fine. Othertimes,
it spoils very quickly. I don't buy milk there, either. Again, I buy milk
where it has high turnover.

Their snacks (chips, pretzels, etc) to me, are overpriced. And I don't find
the quality worth the extra money. Their salsas are good though.

Living in the San Gabriel Valley, in SoCal I have 5 Trader Joe's (3 in
Pasadena, 1 San Gabriel, 1 Monrovia) within 20 minutes of where I live. I
usually buy their frozen calzone, pot pies are very good, frozen tamales,
small pizza's imported from Italy, olive oil, unsalted butter, (usually
$1.00 pound less than the chains) frozen veggies are great...always have the
mushrooms and sliced bell peppers on hand, ...as Sheryl said, the prices for
nuts are excellent, sometimes pet food, and their eggs are well priced also
at $1.29 doz.

Lots of folks switched to Trader Joe's and other independent last year
during the super market clerk's grocery strike, and have not got back to the
supers.

Don't forget the Just Cranberry and Just Cherry juice...much cheaper
than at the "natural" food markets. Do try the preserves made from fresh
cherries. YUM.

Trader Joe's, to me, is a fun place to go. You never know what little
treasure you're going to find there, and it's usually something I don't see
anywhere else. And seeing as how the holidays are coming on us (quickly,
too!), now is as good a time as any and probably better than most to try
their cranberry sauce. It is really good, and this is coming from someone
who was never a big fan of cranberry sauce. The orange version is my
preference, but my family loves both.
There is also a sparkling cranberry juice this year that is delicious too.
I like to grab a Fearless Flyer and page through it, then wander around
looking for what's new.
My brother in law recently found chocolate covered bing cherries there that
were, in his words, "food of the Gods".
My advice? Just go in with an open mind and a willingness to try new stuff.
Also, if you eat breads like Milton's or Ezekiel 4:9, they're much cheaper,
as much as $1.50 less around here, than the rest of the stores.
Oh, and don't forget the giant blocks of chocolate, the heavy whipping
cream, the vegetable chips, and the nuts and dried fruits, and a whole range
of organic products.
