Default Moxie question

I just added a drop of maple syrup to some cola.

Is that what Moxie tastes like?

I thought it tasted like orange soda pop.

I've no idea, what's Moxie?

One of my neighbors makes maple syrup from his own trees, he produces
only a couple gallons a year... takes 40 gllons of sap for 1 gallon of
syrup. He makes a enough for his own use and to give some small
bottles as gifts... just gave me some of last years crop... delicious:

lay a beating on your ass, and you rolled up your sleeves and said get

From what I recall, not even close. It was a bit bitter more root
beer than cola flavor I only ever had it once a long time ago. It
has followers, but I have no idea why.

I looked it up. I think you are waaaaay off base. Said it is bitter, not
sweet.

Sounds like a bargain, considering today's prices.

If your neighbor made his own maple syrup and gave only a few small
bottles as gifts to friends, then why/how did your neighbor get that
'tamper proof' cap on the bottle you show in your photo?? Just curious.

I have a bottle purchased at a local gourmet shop very similar to the
one you show in the photo you shared (link listed above in quoted text).
My photo is here ---> http://oi39.tinypic.com/2h573sw.jpg <-- -
however, the two different bottles may not hold the same volume.

The 'other side' of the detached label from my similar bottle of maple
syrup says, "Butternut Mountain Farm, Morrisville, Vermont, 05661" along
with their phone numbers. It's a wee bottle of only 1.7 fl. oz. (50
ML). The price tag was $3.99, and that's from a couple years ago or more.

He has used old bottles for refilling. Remember, it's not a factory
production and a couple of gallons isn't a lot. He probably had some
bottles given to him or just what's been collected over time.

I was wondering why Sheldon would post a pic of home made maple syrup as
there appears no benefit to anyone or anything (except his ego). It's a
"refilled" maple syrup bottle with no label. For all we know Sheldon
could have removed the label himself from a "new" bottle, "invented" the
story and posted the pic to lend it some credence. Certainly we aren't
able to do a taste test. The pic is a waste of effort.

Because you have no choice if you want that style bottle. That is the

Yes, Krypsis is a pseudonym and it is fake in that it bears no
resemblance to my real name just as much as "Brooklyn" bears no
resemblance to yours! So what's your point?

At least I'm not paranoid enough to believe that I need to back up every
post I make with a "proof". Your comments here prove also that you are
the ignorant ******* here, a fact borne out by the views expressed by
many other RFC posters.

Frankly, who in hell wants to see a picture of a "relabeled" bottle
with indeterminate contents? My point about the label, or more
pointedly, its absence in the FIRST PIC you posted, is that it tells us
nothing that we couldn't determine from your text. The pic is
superfluous and your second pic, with half a label, is no better. Why
post it? Does your insecurity create in you a pressing need to PROVE
that your little tale is true? You pic doesn't manage even that much.
For all we know, you could have printed up a dummy label and stuck it on
the bottle yourself.

If ever the good folks at RFC needed any proof that you are paranoid,
these recent posts of yours are it!

I think yours is the same size bottle. The cap is tamper proof
because that's how most everything is packaged nowadays. The local
folks who produce maple syrup all know each other (same as local honey
producers) and they all use the same styles of bottles... I do know
that this particular style bottle was used because these people
usually use a small barrel type bottle but they said that they
couldn't get that one at the time. The tamper proof caps are put on
as a unit, the seal breaks when opened. These people don't sell
their syrup, they produce only enough for their own use and some small
amount for gifts... lots of locals around here do the same because
they are very proud of their small operations... these folks have 150
acres with 50 sugar maples scattered about... they got no sap this
year due to the warm winter... they are retired and this is one of
their hobbies. There's another neighbor right down the road from me
that sells some of their eggs on the honor system, each egg is stamped
with their name. The syrup bottle has their name on the other side
but I'm not going to post their name, address, and phone number on
usenet.

My original point was that Sheldon could have simply written;

"Go to your cupboard and take out a glass maple syrup container with
maple syrup in it, gaze at it and imagine the flavour of this maple
syrup I was given."

That bit of text would have added just as much to the post as the
picture of a standard maple syrup bottle containing something which we
are assured is indeed maple syrup!

They say a picture is worth a thousand words but, in this case,
Sheldon's picture is just superfluous noise.

I don't think so. Moxie tastes more like cough syrup to me. My son
loves the stuff. I believe the recipe has been changed from the
original.

And nowadays most everything is tamper proof, very few people would
use those products otherwise, they'd pour out the contents and maybe
save the bottle. Those bottles are purchased by the case, they come
with the tamper proof caps UNattached... once they are screwed on the
seal locks onto the raised ridge molded into the glass, it's a one way
thingie, the seal breaks when the cap is unscrewed... anyone who
actually looks at the tamper proof caps it becomes very obvious how
they work... any simpleton who can button their own coat should be
able to figure it out... got some REAL moroons at rfc.

It was originally sold as a health tonic, much like today's energy
drinks. People who remember it may also remember sarsaparilla and birch
beer. I always think of them as New England things.

I've never hidden my real name, anyone who has been at rfc for more
than a couple of years knows my real name is Sheldon Martin... and
hardly a day passes that someone doesn't refer to me as Sheldon.

I saw it in a store while on a trip to New England. I remembered
reading that no one ever seems neutral about it so I tried it out of
curiosity. Nasty. I'm in the group that hates it.

I have seen Soiux City brand sodas in several geographies. I have seen
them at Cost Plus World Market plus various local grocery stores. They
have sarsaparilla and birch beer sodas plus root beer, cola, probably
others.

Hmmm...it's been a very long time, but you could be on the right
track. I only remember a weird aftertaste.

You can also buy new caps for used bottles. That's been possible even
before the tamper proof caps were invented. I can recall buying new
crown seals for when my kids were making their own ginger beer. From
memory, we washed out beer bottles, filled them with the ginger beer,
then applied the crown seals with a special tool and a hammer.

Hmm, I wonder if the grandchildren want to do this? Might be able to
squeeze this activity in between the computer games, computers and
mobile phone activities. Different generation now with different ideas.

In a forum discussion, a picture should add something otherwise it is
superfluous. I have nothing against pictures people post and will look
at most if the topic is of interest to me. I didn't know what to expect
when I initially clicked on Sheldon's link but I did have something more
in mind than a picture of a bottle of maple syrup that looks identical
to one I have in my own cupboard here. We weren't even able to view the
label.

My father (born 1912) told me of this long-ago soft drink, Moxie,
that had a strong stimulant effect.

There may have been revival versions of it since then.

I'm amazed at this energy drink thing. Two guys, much younger than me, buy
these expensive things almost every day. WTH? I tell them that if they
would eat properly they don't need this nonsense. How in the world did I
ever survive my 30's without an energy drink each day?

Most pics of food and food products are a waste of time, JMHO. We can't
taste any of it so what's the point? Oooh, look, someone cooked something.
Nice plate! Really... who cares?

I recognize the maple leaf shape of that bottle The Vermont Country
Store sells maple syrup in bottles like that. If I were willing and able to
make maple syrup I'd certainly sterilize and reuse old bottles for it.

Good question! The easy answer is they've succumbed to marketing propoganda

Haven't they been selling caffeine pills for decades? I forget the
name but I'm sure of it.

It's a whole lot cheaper to buy caffeine tablets. I don't think there is an
energy drink without caffeine.

Yeah...it was (or still is) called "No Doz" (sp?) I bought a package of
that once when I had stayed up all night and had to work. It did nothing
for me as I drank lots of coffee anyway.
