The novice cooks try to duplicate the dish and also do a riff on it. For other viewers who may be as challenged in the kitchen, watching others make mistakes and learning from them will be helpful and maybe empowering. Not everyone is like you, born with flawless taste, cooking technique, plating and style. Give some other folks a break. Television shows can't be designed just for you. There are plenty of people out there that literally know nothing about food and food preparation. They may gain courage from a show like this and try something on their own. Janet US |

It's a contest with a prize so they have to eject a candidate in each episode and they eject the ones doing the worst who therefore need the teaching the most, but it's a contest so they have to do that. As I watch the episodes in a season I see folks who never learned to cook at home. They have no idea how to spell food no to mention cook it. They have top quality teachers teaching them. They learn rapidly. They evolve from clueless to doing just fine. All wrapped around a contest because a lot of viewers like contests. Heck, I like the contests among the experts so I get why it needs to be a contest. But the biggest value is watching the evolution under the tutilege of a teaching chef. And watching the tutilege of the teaching chef. |

If so, or even for >fame, there could be a lot of sandbagging going on. Heck, make it worth our >while and you and I could be worst at something. They ultimately win by being the best. There is a $25,000 prize. The goal of the show is to teach these people, who have absolutely no knowledge of food or cooking, to cook. Burrell and Flay each prepare a dish. They tell the students what it is called, how it was prepared and what is in it. The students taste the dish and comment. It is then up to the students to try to reproduce the dish. I haven't watched any of the 'Worst Cooks' in previous years, but I was captured by this one. One of the teasers for the show was about Chef Burrell telling a woman that her idea of vanilla chicken was a no go. It became apparent over several episodes that this woman had no concept of what vanilla was. She'd heard the word and that was better than all the other words that were around her that threw her into a panic. These people have no idea what the most basic of food ingredients are. They've eaten fast food, frozen food or redi-prepared items all their lives. I can remember the novices being taught knife skills, roux, bechamel, how to butcher a chicken, how to butcher a fish, how to make a vinegarette and vary it, how to make a salad, several different ways to cook a protein and how to tell when it was done. They were taught how to prepare a mixed seafood tray. Almost all of them had never had any kind of sea food. Lots more stuff that I can't recall. I have been totally amazed by what these people don't know that you and I take for granted. One woman asked Bobby Flay "you mean there are different kinds of sausage?" You can tell by the squeamishness that these folks display that they mostly never handled real food. They can't name different kinds of fruit and vegetables -- and I don't mean esoteric produce either. I've also been amazed at what they have learned in a short time. Janet US |

Apparently you don't realize that sqwishy already knows everything that's worth knowing. Anyway, he needs something new to bitch about every few days. By now, he's forgotten all about a lame TV show and he's moved on to something else bitch-worthy. |

I should be on the show. Last night I spent hours on a potluck dish.
First I bought an enormous package of noodles from the asian store (more substantial than ramen) boiled those with ramen spice packets. Then I bought this beautiful package of shredded organic carrots-i kid you not they were pink and yellow-perfect for baby shower-washed them, Then bag of baby spinach-washed and removed stems and tore into tiny pieces. Then a jar of dried beef-used scissors to cut them into thin strips. Tasted my new bottle of hot oil-too hot for this dish but I needed something to keep the noodles from sticking so I added some ginger sesame marinade. So far so good fingers are tasting good. Then I made my fatal error. I wanted to do lime juice just like I do with my ramen and scrambled egg breakfast. I do that with one of those little green plastic limes that squirts juice out. So I bought a bottle of key lime juice from Florida. Not the same thing at all. To make matters worse I had also bought limeade juice concentrate which I think is sweetened. That's what I should have used. Live and Learn. Tossed it out this morning and bought cartons of macaroni salad for 99 cents. |
