I know about them. When the first one broke after a few years we bought
another. But you find yourself waving your hand over all sorts of lids, even
the commode.

Yes, I can't see any advantages, only unnecessary complication, for a
sensor. The foot pedal in my all-plastic OXO kitchen trash container
works very well and the container was not expensive.

Mine is metal and definitely not cheap, but it's sure worth it. I
love having a lid (keeps the odor to zero) and it's very convenient to
lift the lid by stepping on a pedal. It's the second model I've had.
The foot pedal fell off the first one after 8-10 years, but I just
stepped on the metal doohickey that did the real work. That gave up
the ghost after another 5-10 years and now the unit is in the basement
acting as a manually operated trash can.

To be honest there really isn't an advantage. It is just nice to use and
once you get used to one you want to keep it.

I have had mine (motion sensor trashcan) for about 3 years so far and
never a problem.

They're only about $60 + batteries.

I dunno. It sounds like fun but when push comes to shove, I don't
want to stand over a trash can with something drippy in my hands
waving them around just so the lid will open.

More fun if you intone "abracadabra" when you wave them...impresses your friends.

No need for batteries, just a handy electrical outlet.

Honestly it takes very little movement to open it. Even my cat figured
out how to open it once when I put shrimp peels in it. I was still
cooking them and hadn't taken out the trash yet. He stood on a paper
shredder I keep next to it. It's since been moved.

My primary care physician uses one in her exam rooms. Same brand and
size as mine.

that was going to be my next question, I have a very smrt cat, who has
figured out how to open the screen portion of two differently configured
sliding glass doors, he has also figured out how to open every
cabinet/drawer known to man and even a few regular door knobs... the week
before dh left for hospital he told me chester was watching intently every
time i raised the bedroom windows, do you think such a can is safe from such
a cat? Lee

I'd have to install an outlet then. There's nothing even in the
vicinity of where I keep mine.

Darn, you should have taken a video of that and put it on YouTube! I
bet it would have gone viral and given the cat toilet flusher a run
for his money.
