Online shopping for cooking products/wine
I could practically buy everything I need online...... apart from the fact
I like going shopping to see what's new around, and to smell/taste new things. As stated in a previous thread, I just ... bought my BIL 3 cases of wine for his b'day ($129 delivered to the door!!), bought some more cheese making product, bought myself a new pair of New Balance shoes ($80 delivered), All in the space of 15mins!! also, previously bought an Asus Transformer 10 32GB Android Tablet+Keyboard (for just under $590 delivered) 2 *huge* stockpots (from Sydney, Victorias Basement, $159 delivered) bought several cases of bubbles for the SO a case of Gin for me a sodastream machine a case of tonic syrup an icemaking machine replacement gas cylinders for SS machine........ also have bought t-shirts onlne. Retail stores carry the major brands and are mediocre. Going on like, I found dozens of appliances and brand I never heard of. I bought her an espresso machine, a grinder, and the drip coffee maker shipped today. Even the coffee came direct from the Kona grower. (Smithfarms.com) Even my tea comes from teatrader.com Good price, great selection and quality and just a few thousand miles away in another country. I'd like to buy locally, but they just don't have some of the items available. Rather than drive 50 to 100 miles, just a click and it comes to the door. |

I love online shopping. Saves sooo much time! I just realized that the potato recipe I am going to make for Easter would require very thinly sliced potatoes and onions. I used to use my food processor and I just threw it out due to rust inside and on a blade. I could clean it off of the blade but I don't think I could get deep inside. It was like...under the plastic in the middle of the blade. Probably safe but I didn't like the looks of it and it was taking up sooo much room on the counter top. I don't know of any specific kitchen type stores around here and the one that was in downtown Edmonds, I think may not even be there any more. It has moved locations at least twice, I believe. And in looking online, I couldn't find any mandolines available for sale at any stores in this area. Not saying there are none. I just couldn't find the information online. I did find a hand operated one online at Walmart and I paid for rush shipping to get it here in time. I just hope it works and I don't slice the heck out of myself. I've always been somewhat afraid of one because of all the cautions they have on those cooking shows. But I will be super careful with it. And it will take up a lot less room than the food processor. If it turns out that there is an actual need for another food processor, I will get one. But in the meantime I will make do without. I also get a lot of things through Amazon.com. Just got a steamer for hard surfaces. I am going to use it on the kitchen floor. It's supposed to be a lot easier to use than a mop. And I keep getting this weird black sticky crap on various parts of the floor. No clue what it is. I am the type who will clean up a spill when I know I have made one. But the others in this house do not seem to do that. So by the time I find it, it has solidified into something icky. I also do Swagbucks and my choice of redemption of prizes through them is Amazon gift cards. I can earn up to $25 per month. It is difficult to get that much in a month but I have done it a couple of times. How do you like the Soda Stream? My daughter really wants one but I do not. Seems like one more thing to take up space on the counter and I don't really like the taste of Splenda which is what they use. |

I don't know how they can manage to do that but I sure do take advantage of it. Also for gifts that I send to other states, I try to order online and have the items shipped directly there. The price I have to pay for postage is obscene! The only exception I make to this is for my MIL because I usually buy her clothing and it has to be labeled with her name. So I just suck it up and do pay the postage for her gifts. I can't send her food items because she is on a very strict, special diet. Her medical condition is such that she chokes on regular food. And sadly she is not even allowed to be around regular food because she will try to eat it. She almost died, choking on something she shouldn't have. She does like to give out little gifts we used to take her little packets of candies, cookies, crackers, little bottles of lotion and the like when we lived close enough to visit. But we were asked to stop bringing the food because she was sometimes eating it. I do send her flowers once in a while though. |

I don't mail nearly as much as I used to, but I think postage is *way* too low. Especially 1st class. Door to door for 3000+miles for less than 1/2 a dollar? I keep a stock of the various sized cartons, saves me driving to the post office, I leave the carton in my rural mailbox with my check taped to the carton, the PO carrier handles it. There are three places in town here for UPS drop off. Many on line sellers will email a label for free returns, Amazon does. |

The various artificial sweeteners are unknown negatives, but they are used in vastly smaller quantities than the sugar. |

We did go down to view it a couple of times, but all the work was done online, searching for it, making offers, bank transfers, talking to solicitors, real estate agents etc, was all done online. I recently bought a whole bunch of (non) grocery items online.,.. shampoos and conditioners, dishwasher tablets, pre-soaking powder, dishwashing liquid etc, etc. The beauty of that stuff was it was sorta bulk buys, but postage was capped at $11. Samesame for my kitchwares from Peters Of Kensington..... you can order beacoup items weighing a ton (figurativly!!) and it only costs you $11 postage. I orderd a whole shite-load of kitchen wares for Christmas presents ..... knives, mortars and pestles, frypans, micrograters, fondue sets etc.... all $11 postage :-) But yes....... all items paid for :-) -- Peter Tasmania Australia |

That being said, all the major department stores (and even some of the smaller ones) over here now do online shopping, so whether you want to battle the crowds and trying to find a parking spot to purchase your $25 appliance, or order it through their website and have it delivered, is up to you. The only 'local' businesses we have are grocery/butchers/fish shops etc. As for not giving a 'rats arse' about me....... if they want to keep me as a customer, and have my (very well documented) repeat business, they have to look after me, even though we have never met face to face. Case in point....... the Sodastream order I just got in was shoddily packed, and the gas cylinders had ruptured the syrup box (containing 6 bottles), dented some of the syrup bottles, and put a little hole/leak in one. I spoke to the company on the phone, sent them an email with accompanying pictures, and they sent one back to say they were going to replace *all* the bottles of syrup for me. At the moment, I'm looking around (online) for a nice hotel in the city for a couple of nights, as we are going to 'get away' and spend some time and see some family members we don't get to see all that often, as well as catch up with #1 and #2 daughters new boyfriends (and one set of the parents). It started as just an "Oh, we'll come over and catch up with you sometime", to now organising about 15 people for a 'catch up' at our favourite pizza/pasta place with copious amounts of food and wine to be consumed :-) I'm taking all the wine for everyone to drink on the night.... we have plenty here, and I can't drink it anymore, and the SO doesn't want to drink it by herself :-) Speaking of catching up...... I have a couple of friends who are going to be touring Europe/France (mainly to follow the Tour de France.... I'll have to see if they are going anywhere near Italy :-) -- Peter Tasmania Australia |
