She danced the Last Dance!

I wore a trash bag with a suit painted on it with a Majic Marker to a
local disco club once. We chickened out actually going in though.
Bryan was there too as I recall.

She was a marvel. She certainly had what it took market the hot-chick
disco persona, as the primary asset of businessman (and Popiel Disco
Machine inventor) Georgio Moroder. But there's no shame in dance
mega-hits.

But she was much more than that, and almost always rose above the
quality of the material. Her career reminds me of that of Jackie
Wilson, whose stunning ability always shined through the dunces he had
to work with.

Summer had an absolutely incredible voice, great interpretation,
flexibility--everything. Quincy Jones produced her first Geffen
release: Donna Summer. It was the center of her career to my tastes.

I recall the Biography Channel revealing her as a devout Christian,
who fell into singing accidently, almost against her will, to hear
them tell it. Wiki paints a much different picture.

I saw 3 Dog Night in Nashville in early 1970. I wonder if she was
onstage. I don't recall backup singers, but I had lousy seats.

I must have seen the same tour when it passed through OKC. I had seats
within hailing distance of the back wall in the balcony and couldn't
even accurately count how many humans were on the stage.

The girl I was with, our only date, said the entire thing was
hopelessly contrived. It was the first time I'd heard the word.

Which word, hopelessly or contrived?

contrived
b : to form or create in an artistic or ingenious manner

How else do you get an audience to come watch a buncha ppl onstage?
Nazi troops? Perhaps you misunderstood and the girl was referring to
yer date with her.

Contrived.

That's the verb. She used the adjective. And my dictionary has it as

b : created or arranged in a way that seems artificial and unrealistic.

Artificial and unrealistic seemed pretty much were we were at in 1970.

In the end she was referring to BOTH!

I was in Nashville TN, a place 10 yrs behind the two coasts. I was so
starved for any contemporary entertainment, I woulda paid to see Tiny
Tim, live. I saw exactly 3 concerts in Nashville that were NOT C&W
based. Three Dog Night, Steppenwolf, and an awesome jazz concert with
Dave Bruebeck and many of the jazz giants of the day. In real time,
Nashville was as realistic and non-artificial as one would be likely
to find in 1970. To be frank, it was downright grim.

heh heh.... In my case, I went with 2 girls, contriving like crazy.
Alas, my efforts were, in the end, also hopeless.

I once saw Tiny Tim, live. He was part of 12 performers/groups who
toured the county fair circuit years after their single hits. Free
concert with fair admission.

I thought you were gonna say Anita Baker.

Dang, this is gonna have me back in the garage digging through the
artifacts of youth. Again.

In the years I was in radio, I met my share of show business folk.
Many of them were creeps, but some were decent people, and Tiny Tim
was far and away the nicest celebrity I ever met He was incredibly
polite, and very entertaining; he always carried his trademark ukulele
with him and it seemed like every five minutes or so he would start
playing a song by Irving Berlin. He was also an absolute authority on
the music of the early 20th century.

He certainly was a walking dictionary of the repertoire. Even more
amazing, with very little in the way of demonstrable performance
ability he was a significant novelty act for a number of years, making
no small amount of loot in the process. Not bad.

His "Tiptoe Through the Tulips" was by and large homage to Nick Lucas
for whom I have profound respect. I've have long attempted to copy
Lucas's guitar style from way back when.

I saw the Beatles, and it turned me off large venue concerts. As soon as
the Beatles came on stage all the girls started screaming, some sort of
mass hysteria. I guess that is what they figured you are supposed to do
at a Beatles concert. I never heard a note.

It was almost a complete waste of time. The opening act of King Curtis,
who played a style of music I did not appreciate at the time. I learned
just a few years ago that the guitarist for King Curtis on that tour was
Jimi Hendrix. If it is not a huge shame that I was so disappointed in
the Beatles concert, I saw Jimi Hendrix in concert and didn't even
realize it until 40 years later.

But 99% of the fans were stoned and thought they had a great time.

I'm not a Beatles or Hendrix fan so it would not excite me either way.
My favorite concert of all times was Harry Chapin. Small venue, about
1980 I think. After the concert, Harry sold T shirts and stuff to
raise money for World Hunger. We were in the back of the lobby
waiting to buy one of his poetry books and have it signed. Waiting for
the crowd to leave, we were talking to a woman also waiting about the
concert. She took us over and introduced us to her husband! Never
guessed who she was. Very nice, unpretentious people.
