Since I was a kid I've never liked tomatoes. Not sure why. So into
adulthood I just avoid tomatoes on sandwiches. I like pasta with tomato sauce so it isn't the flavor. Last weekend we had a cookout and one of my contributions was condiments and fixins' for burgers and there were tomatoes left over and I had to take them home. So I made my first real BLT with tomato slices included and I liked it. |

My husband was just like you for decades: didn't have anything against tomato in condiments and sauces, but didn't like raw, sliced tomatoes and avoided them in sandwiches. Suddenly, he's eating them and tells me he actually likes them in a sandwich now. That one snuck up and surprised me! -- Food is an important part of a balanced diet. |

About 15 yrs ago, we got a doz homegrown tomatoes from an in-law. Best I've eaten in 50 yrs. So good, we ate them whole, like an apple, cuz didn't wanna adulterate such awesome flavor. Did try a couple in a tomato, mayo, bread sandwich. Un-bee-lievable! nb -- vi --the heart of evil! Support labeling GMOs <http://www.labelgmos.org/> |

Even if it's just fried bologna. In the summer when the tomatoes are coming in, I cut a large one into slabs and stuff it into a pita with mayo, maybe with some pepper. Heaven. Best no one is around to see me eat it. Heh. nancy |

Make sure the markets insist on local produce. Around here it is usually the county and the adjacent ones. But any more most of the counties actually have their own. They come in earlier and even I almost always get a decent yield. With the regular tomato plants, every year it is a gardener's battle against whichever pest is most active, be it insect, mold or critters. Some years those battles are won quite well, other years, the yield is down or worse, wrecked at the end of a growing season, but with cherries, there are always some fresh and delightful fruits almost every day once they get going. You're right, especially as I only grew one type of tomato, Mortgage Lifters. I hope that at least two plants do well, but if we have a summer like last year, it was too hot, I didn't get a lot of tomates. Except the grape tomatoes (Napa). They didn't give up, it was funny to see hundreds of them all over the kitchen. Not complaining. > Some years those battles are won quite well, other years, the yield is > down or worse, wrecked at the end of a growing season, but with > cherries, there are always some fresh and delightful fruits almost > every day once they get going. I disliked tomatoes also but knew why. Mom only had two ideas for
tomatoes. Sliced, served flat on a plate mounded with sugar (gack!) Stewed, and mixed with milk and crackers in a bowl (yuck!) I was over 40 before I ate tomatoe again. It was served on a tenderloin that had many toppings and would have been too messy to remove. I decided it wasnt too bad. I still dont buy tomatoes, but now I enjoy it when served in a sub/burger/etc. |

Don't thiknk I have any heirlooms. 4 beefsteaks (the only tomato name I could remember when I boufght the plants) and 2 others which I can't remember the name of right now. Lemme go look... Oh dear, tomatoes were the ONLy veg I'd eat as a kid. I hate to even see one not eaten in a resto salad. Seems like such a waste. Try a slice on a tuna salad sang.....adds nice moisture esp if your roll is dry. I'm really sorry you've not known the wonderful combo of a BLT. My heart aches for ya...... |
