The big one at 4AM sunday morning, 22 seconds of quake, was a real flashback of the one in 1996, when the ground rocked heavily and did damage here around, too. |

That distance is not a guarantee: during the Loma Prieta earthquake of 1989, most of the serious damage was 50-60 km away, in San Francisco and Oakland. > The big one at 4AM sunday morning, 22 seconds of quake, was a real flashback > of the one in 1996, when the ground rocked heavily and did damage here > around, too. Build a reinforced concrete house, attached to bedrock. |

The Loma Prieta earthquake happened at 5 PM, when many people were still at work, or trying to get home. I'd rather be home when an earthquake happened, than to have everyone be miles away. |

That way we can see the dark image of a ballistic dog arching in towards the bed just before she lands on us. Dogs like to be in the middle of their people when the ground starts shaking and we need to be awake so we can dodge our more sensative parts before they land on us. Thud, oooff. > Not always. Duck and cover, wait for it to stop, toss on some clothes and ruch out to see if any of the negihbors were injured. That one took out part of the parking structure at Cal State Los Angeles. |

A toast to you with an Asti Prosecco ! To get back on-topic : Which dish or drink would really be ruined by an earthquake ? A Soufflé ? A Martini - stirred, not shaken ? Cheers, Michael Kuettner |

True, thankfully our situation is particular: Emilia lies on a bed of clay and sand, thus the quake waves tend to lose their strength very quick, so the quakes always hit "softer" and in a smaller radius than in the nearby apennines, where the rock transmits the waves much better. >> The big one at 4AM sunday morning, 22 seconds of quake, was a real >> flashback of the one in 1996, when the ground rocked heavily and did >> damage here around, too. > Build a reinforced concrete house, attached to bedrock. Many houses here are in bricks and concrete. Bedrock? The town of the Flintstones'? |
