Default Holy crap, I'm almost cellphone literate!

I finally did it. Bought a new tracfone and upgraded to camera and
broswser capability. I will send my daughter a picture on her
birthday, she being convinced I'm a cellphone dunce. Also jes got a
new flat panel LCD monitor, my old CRT monitor having died last
weekend. Jay-sus! ....I'm being dragged into the 21st century,
kicking and screaming.

Also bought a doz organic eggs from Safeway. The org eggs from Kroger
were abysmal, not even as good as their cheapo eggs. I'm sooo into
lemon bars, it's killing me. Jes wanna get a good recipe perfected b4
I burn out on the damn things ....which I need to do, they having 4
eggs and a whole stick of butter (1/4lb) per batch. Here I went semi
vague'n to lower my cholesterol and now I'm shooting myself in the
foot with a home baked desert.

Ya' can't deny yer palate.

LOL! I just cancelled my cell phone service today. It was a ridiculous
waste of money. I can't get a signal unless I walk to the end of the
driveway, cross both fingers, hop up and down on one foot while reciting
poetry We're talking serious lack of cell coverage here. I have a land
line. No longer a cell phone.

I'll jump on the non-organic bandwagon. It's a marketing scheme designed to
make you pay more for eggs. Unless you were there throughout the process,
how do you know the eggs are organic?

Sure you can. Except when you get a craving for lemon bars

It's definitely a crapshoot. The last organic eggs I bought were
terrible. OTOH, the organic cilantro and flat parsely I buy are
infinitely superior and more flavorful than the non-orgainic
offerings. I'm still exploring it.

Amazing difference on the monitor huh? I have a 19" CRT TV that I'm
unable to give away. Tomorrow it goes to the curb with a "free" sign.
I offered it to a nursing home and they had no interest.

You do have a H-iDef TV don't you? Amazing difference.

The best oranges I ever had were organic.
Packed with flavor. I've heard it claimed
that fertilizers cause large growth but low
in flavor, while growth without fertilizer
or just organic fertilizer causes smaller
but more concentrated growth.

Another possibility is that the type of
farmer who grows organic is also the type
who invests more care producing a quality
product, rather than quality being a result
of organic methods.

It's hard for me to believe how big my monitor used to be
and how much room it took up on my desk.

Nobody wants it. I couldn't give mine away, either. It's the
first time I replaced a tv that was working fine, but I had
to get that big clunky thing out of here.

Often it is just a matter of switching carriers since it is pretty
common for the carriers to have different cell site locations. My phone
is on VZW and there are 3 bars when in the basement. tmobile as an
example might be available here if you walk down the street and find
just the right spot and don't move.

I had a Dell 21" crt, was sent as a warrenty replacement, but in the
interim I bought a flat panel monitor so never used the crt. It sat
for nearly two years when I decided I would never use it. No one I
offered to for free would take it. Finally I put it to the curb,
where it sat for most of a week until the trash truck came by and the
driver dumped it in with the recyclables.

'Zactly! There is no such thing as organic food, not so long as
there's precipitation and gravity. And it's very easy to tell that
produce isn't organic, if it has no insect damage it's not organic.
The idiots who pay nearly double for perfect looking organic produce
have smaller brains than an insect. I don't use any insecticides in
my vegetable garden, it's rare I harvest anything that doesn't show
some sign of insect nibbling.

I wish it was so, here, Janet. Sadly, it's not. Agribiz has been
hacking away at the basic tenents of organic ag for a long time and I
can see it becoming a mere folly of the true concept.

I bought some org eggs from one store. Pitiful. Little/no flavor
improvement, not even as good as the store's cheapo egg-factory eggs.
I'm trying another org brand from another store. We'll see.

I used to buy eggs from a cow orker who raised chickens at home. They
were beyond good, almost freakishly excellent. Yolks bright orange!
Not yellow. They stood up like Pam Andersons hooters. So thick and
rich, were like yellow honey. I've never seen eggs like that again,
organic or otherwise. That was 30 yrs ago. I'd raise some egg
chickens if I could, but can't. So sad.

I wish. Costs $10 per to unload 'em, here. I've got $30 worth of

Cow orker's really do sell the best eggs, imo.

Organic yes, I go along with you on that... but the other catch phrase
on egg cartons is "cage free"... a term with many interpretations.

I have a work blackerry with verizon service and there is a hotkey combo
to update your phone occasionally with the best reception. I think it's
*22 or *21. I'll have to go look up my last support email when I get a

I have an old 17" monitor that I can't even lift. It's staying put
downstairs until someone either takes it to a recycle place or someone
wants it. Works fine, it's just too heavy.

My cats used to love old monitors. They could sit on them and stay warm.

Same here. First time I replaced a working TV. It took two people and a
hand truck to wheel it out. Nobody wanted it. But we lucked out. The
county already announced they were overwhelmed with electronic recycling
from the prior year. A local TV station has an annual home show at a
local mall. In conjunction with that they were going to hold free
electronic recycling. I couldn't believe it the traffic. There were two
queues formed leading into two unloading areas and there had to be
10,000 TVs near where we unloaded.

*228, It updates the PRL (Preferred Roaming List). It was also the
famous thing that Verizon CS folks are trained to tell you about even it
it makes no sense. So when you called about a problem they would tell
you it had to be because you didn't update the PRL. The PRL actually
only does something if you are not using native coverage.

4G Verizon phones use SIMs and are now automatically updated. If I dial
*228 on my current phone it gives an error message.

Try lifting my 36" Sony, it weighs 207 pounds. It got electricuted
during a lightening storm and would only turn on occasionally and then
after a couple minutes cut off. Sony wanted me to ship it to their
repair shop in Florida, R U Nutz! I managed to lift it off its stand
onto a blanket on the floor and dragged to the next room where it sat
for six months. Meanwhile I bought the 55" Vizio. One day I went to
try the Sony and amazingly it turned on and played perfectly, it took
that long for the charge in its built in spike arrestor to bleed out,
least that's what I was told by the cable tv tech. I offered it to a
few people but the cheapo *******s would only take it if I delivered
it... I decided to keep it, it plays well and has an excellent picture
for a flat screen crt. It cost $2,200 ten years ago, when flat panels
first came out and a small one cost $10,000.

My old ferret, Fred, loved to sit on top of my aquarium. He would take deep
breaths and stick his head underwater trying to catch the fish in there.
Smartly, the fish would stay at the bottom of the tank whenever they saw his
head underwater. It was funny.

Right? Mine wasn't even that big, but it was heavy and
awkward. Not surprising, since that's the reason I wanted a
new tv. I just thought How did we get it up here in the first
place?

Cool. We have to take ours to the town recycling center. I see
what happens to refrigerators and the like, it's stripped down almost
completely recycled. I wonder what they do with tv sets.

Goodwill accepts electronics. If it works, they resell it after
cleaning the hard drive. If it is not working it goes to center that
strips and sells the material in them. Check with your local Goodwill
and see if they will pick up.

Don't know. Most of the large scale recycling processes don't work out
because they are so many different materials involved in TVs and
monitors. So the equipment and labor needed to separate the different
materials is higher than the resale value of those materials.

This is all new information to me and I've been with Verizon for at
least 10 years, probably a lot more. Shows how many times I've needed
to call customer service if that was a standard part of the CS spiel.

Are you saying that this is a way to be covered when we're in an area
that coverage the map tells us Verizon doesn't cover, or does it just
cover us when we are in a "black hole" within a coverage area? If it
really switches carriers, I could have used that before my mother's
death because she lived between two coastal mountain ranges in an area
that was only covered by AT&T; so I had to borrow her cell phone if I
wanted to make a long distance call.

George, I'd rather spend the $35/month on groceries. I live on what is
pretty much a string of barrier islands. None of my friends and neighbors
have cell phones because they don't work here, regardless of the carrier. I
was late to the game on figuring out I don't have a need for a cell phone.

A couple of times a year there is a recycling event at a local minor
league baseball stadium in town (Go Bowie Baysox!) and they take
electronics, old paint and other hazardous material (the list isn't all
inclusive), old appliances, and they even have big paper shredders. I
haven't seen an event lately but I'm on the watch for it.

Which model of phone did you get? I am thinking about upgrading my
Tracfone but can't decide what I want.

I got the cheapest smartphone ever, only $29.95 at Walmart. It's an
LG501C and has even more stuff than I ever dreamed of. I bought it
merely to trade cellphone pictures to my daughter (MMS), but
discovered I can also access the internet, if necessary. It also has
a real qwerty keyboard. Amazing!

One thing to know, Susan. What you can get from tracfone is dependent
on your location. I'm waaay out in the CO boonies, so only certain
low end models are available in this area. I can't get the better
models available If I lived in, say, Denver. It seems to be an area
code thing. I could buy a more featured phone if I purchased it in
Denver and settled for a Denver area code. OTOH, I can't imagine
wanting more features than this cheapo LG model has. Pictures, txt
msg, www access, qwerty keyboard, waaay more than I'll ever use.
Plus, I got my 5 hr time xfered, no problem. Fees are more than
reasonable. Reg voice phone and internet connection is a straight
min-per-min fee. Txt msgs are only 1/3 min for the entire msg (120
characters). Lastly, I think this model automatically qualifies me
for dbl-time mins, though I'm not real sure how that works. We'll
see. I more than happy, as I thought I was gonna hafta spend 2X-3X as
much for this level of phone.

I think I am going for the Samsung R455C since I want something I can
see and type on. It has more bells and whistles than I really want
but most of the others are about the same size as the one I have now.
I may decide that some of the other things are useful, like taking
pictures. I almost always have my phone with me but rarely do I have
my camera.

The double minutes means that if you buy 60 minutes your actually get
120. Right now I have 1200+ minutes and pay $6+ per month to keep the
account active. I am sure I can transfer my current minutes to the
new phone. I have done that before when we got new phones. I will
get it a soon as I get back from vacation. I have been using Tracfone
for over 10 years.

I'm happy with Tracfone, too. I have a couple of Motorolas, the most
recent one is the EX124G which has a lot of features, not that I use
any of them.

It replaced a Samsung, which was horrible to talk on. Read reviews
and good luck.

It's also easy to transfer your phone number from one tracfone to the next.

Strange. I've transferred my number probably 5 times without a problem.
I've had the same cell phone number since 1995.

I usually just leave mine on my side table or in the desk drawer until
lunch and it's thawed. I thought I was the only one that did that.
Everyone else at work takes theirs out of the freezer and hogs the mw
for 6 minutes. I've never found anything wrong with it when heated up
thawed.

I wish Stouffers wasn't so salty! I'd eat their french bread pizzas
if they tasted better. I also think their vegetable lasagna is great,
but it's too salty and they skimp too much on garlic & parmesan... so
although I have the inclination, I don't buy them because salt doesn't
equal flavor in my book.
