Default Sweetened vs "shredded coconut"

I've got a recipe [for sweet potato oatmeal bars] that calls for
shredded coconut. I assume that means unsweetened.

I've got a bag and a half of sweetened that I would like to get rid
of.

If the recipe calls for 1 1/4 cups shredded coconut and 1 cup sugar--
how does using sweetened coconut and reducing the sugar by a Tbl or 2
sound?

There is a 1/2 cup of chocolate chips in the recipe, 1 1/3 cups sweet
potato puree-- and it uses coconut oil, so I don't want to overdo the
sweetness.

There shouldn't be any other difference in using sweetened vs shredded
coconut, is there?

This page starts with the recipe found in the same book-- then adds
hemp seed and almond milk-

I can't even imagine "unsweetened" coconut. It's sweet by its very
nature. Plus, with a cup of sugar, jes how is "sweetened" coconut
gonna derail yer oatmeal bars?

my first batch, I wouldn't add any sugar. If they're not sweet
enough, you can adjust the next batch. And top the current batch with
honey or some such.

You've gotta get a bag of each. The sweetened stuff is *very*
sweet-- and stickier. It is the difference between a peanut and a
chocolate covered peanut.

The oatmeal bars are for fuel for my daughter who is going to a 4day
concert-- If they were for snacking, [especially for my son and I]
I'd not even worry about too sweet.

I think I might just do that---- at least cut it much more drastically
than I intended.

It *is* always easier to add sweetness than take it away and I
planned on 2 batches anyway.

Thanks-

Hmmm.... I guess I've never run across sweetened coconut, but I'll
keep it in mind.

Is she audience or performer? Hope she has a good time.

I guess it all depends of where you live/shop. I only see the
sweetened type on the shelf of the grocery store where I shop the
most. They used to have sweetened and unsweetened side by side, but
haven't since the remodel. I supposed they would stock it again if
they have it in the central warehouse and someone made a request. But
if someone else hasn't requested unsweetened before this, I'm probably
the only one who even cares.

Same here-- rarely see the unsweetened stuff.

BTW- I reduced the sugar by 1/2 & they turned out ok. Turns out
the recipe is a real good start for a vegan & gluten free snack. We'll
be adding a lot more fruit and nuts to it next time.

I make a certain type of cookie that uses unsweetened coconut. I have
to hunt for it. Most packaged coconuts are sweetened. On the grocery
shelf I can always find several packages of shredded and sweetened.
There's always several packages of flaked and sweetened. I've only
seen one that says unsweetened shredded coconut.

Thank you. I'm not crazy after all (okay, that's debatable).
