Default Your state's sandwich

Here's a website showing minimalist sandwich displays for each state.

http://www.statelysandwiches.com/

The more obvious have already been assigned. What would you pick for
your state?

I haven't a clue for CO. I can't see a Denver sandwich, which is
basically a Denver omelet on toast. Ick. As it's a beef raising state,
perhaps a steak sandwich.

Chicken Parm for CT? Huh???? I've lived here for over 30 years and
it is a relative rarity on sandwich shop menus. OTOH, hamburgers go
back, way back here.

I count twelve states. That's not even enough to make up the original 13
colonies. Not a fair sampling

I'd always choose a BLT, certainly not what they picked for CA.

Alaska isn't shown on the site, but my guess would be if there was a
"state sandwich" here, it would be a halibut burger, as most all
restaurants here have them on the menus, and they are delicious!

When I was in Kodiak several years ago, there is a restaurant you can
go to out in the "boonies" and get the BEST buffalo burger. The owners
raise the buffalo themselves, and are famous for their burgers. Course
my hubby would say, he prefers a moose burger from one he has shot.

Yeah. I vehemently disagree with the CA choice, too. It would fly in
Tinseltown, but nowhere else in CA. I'd go with a Banh Mi or a
burrito, first. Perhaps a Mexican torta. Also, if I was to award the
hamburger to any state, it would be CA. I know! A veggie burger. 8|

I can't agree with that list... hardly any Noo Yawker orders a reuben,
maybe out of towners but not Noo Yawkers. The most common sandwich in
NYC ordered by Noo Yawkers has to be a bagel with a schmear or fried
egg on a buttered kaiser roll. In the rest of the state it varies
greatly by area... around here it's a saw-seege n' peppers parm hero.

If the character of the state dictated what the sandwich would be, the
Indiana State Sandwich would be spam on stale wonder bread, with
miracle whip.

I guess I can see the rationale for the sandwich chosen for
Massachusetts (the fluffernutter), because marshmallow fluff was
invented here. BUT I was sure the state sandwich, which one finds
under various names was going to be the one with turkey, stuffing,
cranberry sauce etc. Hmmm. I haven't had one for a LONG time.

For the State of Intoxication, I would suggest the gummy cheese and
stale orange cracker sandwich.

For Colorado, I was thinking the Fool's Gold Loaf, which is a loaf of
Italian bread that is sliced down the middle and has a jar of peanut
butter, a jar of jelly and a pound of fried bacon on it. It was the
sandwich that was so good that Elvis Presley used to fly from
Graceland to the Denver airport, where he would be met at the tarmac
by a guy from the sandwich shop with a sack of these sandwiches and
they would eat them on the way back to Memphis. It's no wonder E died
of a massive heart attack at 42.

Elvis could also figure into the sandwich from Tennessee, which could
be the fried peanut butter and banana sandwiches.

I live in South Carolina, and the unofficial state sandwich is
probably the chili-cheeseburger, which of course is a chili without
beans, and is topped with mustard and pickles, although I skip on the
pickles.

What kind of jelly? Crunchy or smooth PB? Chewy or fluffy bread?
Sesame seeds on top? Would turkey bacon be good too? How about
lettuce, tomato, and mayonnaise? Chipotle sauce?

I've been there. It has a turtle and and a tea-bagger for senators... And
the sandwich site already lists the hot brown. People rave about it.

But this is a state where women lead the nation in smoking while pregnant.
It's around 30%! And I've never seen so many morbidly obese people in my
life.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fool's_Gold_Loaf

Fool's Gold Loaf is a sandwich made by the Colorado Mine Company, a
restaurant in Denver, Colorado. The sandwich consists of a single
warmed, hollowed-out loaf of bread filled with one jar of creamy
peanut butter, one jar of grape jelly, and a pound of bacon. The name
of the sandwich is derived from its price of $49.95.[citation needed]
In later years, it was priced closer to $100 for the sandwich and a
bottle of Dom Pérignon.[citation needed]

On the night of February 1, 1976, Elvis Presley was at his home
Graceland in Memphis, Tennessee, entertaining Capt. Jerry Kennedy of
the Denver, Colorado police force, and Ron Pietrafeso of Colorado's
Strike Force Against Crime. The three men began discussing the
sandwich, and Presley decided he wanted one right then. Presley had
been to the restaurant before, while in Denver.
Kennedy and Pietrafeso were friends of the owners and hung out there
often, so they were driven to the Memphis airport and boarded
Presley's private jet, the Lisa Marie, and flew the two hours to
Denver. When they arrived in Denver at 1:40 AM, the plane taxied to a
special hangar where the passengers were greeted by Buck Scott, the
owner of the Colorado Mine Company, and his wife Cindy who had brought
22 fresh Fool's Gold Loaves for the men. They spent three hours in the
hangar eating the sandwiches, washing them down with Perrier and
champagne. Presley invited the pilots of the plane, Milo High and
Elwood Davis, to join them. When they were done, they flew back to
Memphis without ever having left the Denver airport.[1]

Iowa might be the loose meat sandwich.

Illinois would either be the Italian Beef sandwich or Chicago Dog.

Michigan might be the Michigan Coney Island Hot Dog.

New York might be the Beef on Weck, but that's more of a Buffalo
thing.

Some cities have their own signature sandwiches. Pittsburgh has
Primanti Brothers and the Oyster House fish sandwich. Philadelphia of
course has the Cheesesteak.

Well...the links on that website aren't working right now.
I would have loved to see what they picked for a Virginia sandwich.

I can't imagine any single one for the entire state.
As in many states, Virginia has mountain folk (even hillbillies) and beach
bums. City people and farmers.

Oh wait a darn minute. I just googled it and surprisingly they mentioned
the one thing I was going to say as I live near the coast.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Virginia. A GOOD reader picks, "for the Great Commonwealth of Virginia...
the Softshell Crab Sammich! The only state
sandwich with legs! Only available from the first full moon in May until
fall, the Atlantic Blue Crab sheds its shell and becomes a
mouthwatering delectation. Whether deep fired, grilled, broiled or sauteed,
these little suckers are the very best thing you can
put on a bun!"

http://www.good.is/post/the-united-s...ions/#Virginia
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A restaruant only .3 miles from me sells those. They fry up a softshell
crab and serve it on a bun. The bun has all the legs hanging out....looks
like a giant spider sandwich but if you like crab it's so very good! They
serve it with fries and cole slaw or whatever your choice of side might be.

If you have a weak stomach, like me, remember yer eating the entire
crab. That includes the crabs intestines and all they may contain,
like crab doody, crab creep-crawlies, etc. With my wimpy tummy, I
can't eat 'em. Cleans me right out.

Not so, notbob...the softshell crab is cleaned before cooking;
if you get all that stuff it's like they served you a roasted chicken
that hadn't been gutted or feathered, just put into the oven.
They go through all this work; all that is left is purely delicious.

I musta missed that. I thought SS crabs were prepared uncleaned. I
know I had a deep fried crab at a Japanese resto, once. The didn't
clean diddly. Maybe the cook was jes ****ed cuz we came in too close
to closing. Regardless, that crab went thru me like Sherman to the
sea! ;o

I tried soft shell crab once, didn't like it. I couldn't get past the
whole eating the shell thing, as the shell resembled to me that shell
on a shrimp tail. I would much rather eat crab legs.

Ooh, that would hurt. I ran into an uncleaned one also deep fried
in a quaint little shack on Sanibel Island. First bite, a mouthful
of crab gills (the dead man's fingers.) If I hadn't been eating them
for years, it would have put me off for the rest of my life. As it was
I just spat it out and refused to pay. Ah well, worse has happened.

Isn't that where loose meat (loosemeat?) sandwiches emanate from?

Oh dear! Do you mean those insidious-sounding drugs I was hearing
about on NPR today?

I can see every state except Indiana having a classy or interesting
sandwich.

I would say both.

North Carolina would have to be the BBQ pork sandwich, with a dollop
of slaw on top. Eastern Carolina is more vinegar and red pepper
flakes sauce, Western Carolina is more mustard based sauce, and I
think you get out of the Carolinas it's mostly tomato based BBQ
sauces, but it's all good.

I lived in Cincinnati for a number of years and traveled all over the
state, and can't think of a sandwich that represents Ohio. Cincinnati
had no signature sandwich, as it was famous for it's Cincinnati Chili,
along with Goetta, and Graeter's Ice Cream. Speaking of Graeter's, it
is finally starting to show up here in the Greenville area. The Fresh
Market carries Graeter's now, along with Publix.

Sprouts, wheat bread and avacado. Yeah, right.

I'm calling the cheeseburger a California perfection. Not invention but
perfection. Heavenly burgers can be found anywhere here. McDonald's
started here. They have slipped a tad from heavenly status though.
