It's constructed just like a $10 toaster, with nichrome wire stapled
to insulating board:

We used to have a similar toaster. It was great for toasting some of
those strange breads that we used to get at the Italian bakery in town
like Calabrian bread. You would have to cut a slice in half to get it
into a regular toaster, so the longer toaster was great. The slots were
long enough to put in two slices of regular bread.

Looks like it could toast a split batard
for sandwiches very nicely.

With regrets, I'll resist bidding because
a) I'm trying to low-carb and seldom eat bread,
b) precious little room for another appliance,
and c) a toaster oven can also toast a split
batard plus do other things.

I guess I'm just drawn to those long slots,
which I've never seen before.

I think it looks like a waste of space due to the size, but you might have a
bigger kitchen than I do. I like a toaster oven for toast anyway and I can
do other things with it as well.

They're commonly available, from most toaster manufacturers. We have a
Kenwood, which we've had for well over ten years.

It's gently woven nichrome to mica sheets. Probably no staples.

I suppose I could google, but I don't feel like it. What's a 'batard'?

Not bad. It's just missing a bagel setting.

You haven't seen that particular toaster or you haven't seen one with
long slots before? What's special about this one - are the slots
wider than usual?

It's the name of a shape. Batard is a shorter, fatter baguette.

Long slots, which I hadn't seen before.

Okay - they're around, you just haven't noticed them before. I was
leaning toward a "long slot" the last time I replaced my toaster but
then found one with a retro look that I went with instead.
http://www.toaster-oven.net/ProductImages/classic.gif To be honest, I
don't have much need for long slots, but I might go with one the next
time around anyway.

We used to use them in my short order cook days way back. They could toast
anything.

But still the dirt-cheap construction found in $10 toasters.
