I loved that movie... I should have bought a house that was pre-disaster.
Marriage too!

There are a lot of threads in this group, so ordinarily I don't
just go from top to bottom, I sort of pick and choose on the basis of
already being active in a thread or on the title. The title of this
one lured me in. I wondered where it might go. I thought maybe it
was some new kind of sausage made from north pole seals or whale
blubber. But I also thought of Polish, I will admit.

But now if this doesn't bore you - or even if it does - I do
think mispronouncing something for years and not knowing it is funny
at times. I knew a guy named Johnny Grace who hung out at the same
poolroom who used to go around singing "Occupation GI Blues", as sung
by Elvis Presley. I had heard Elvis's version but didn't care enough
to listen to the words.

When Grace sang it, this is what I heard, and what for years I
thought were the actual words of the song.

"I got the hut two three four occupation GI blues, from Ma-jiaha to
the hills of Ma-jiashu. I figured he's a soldier occupying some post
world war two island, or maybe somewhere near Korea - something Asian
- and that he had the blues because the island was small and the only
places to go on the weekend were the small towns of Ma-jiaha or Ma-
jiashu.

Years later I heard Presley's version on the radio and thought
of Johnny Grace which in turn forced me to listen to the lyrics.
Johnny's impression of Presley was good, but exaggerated as
impersonations often are, so he used to slur a lot when he did the
Presley song. Presley's voice was actually clearer. I heard the
words. Here they are compared to the ones I heard in Johnny Grace's
version.

"I got the hut two three four occupation GI Blues, from my GI hat to
the heels of my GI shoes". I had to laugh. And I loved it, because I
love laughing.

It's not "I've got the hut two three four occupation GI blues"
It's a familiar old army saying "Hup two three four. Hup two three four."
