I haven't eaten canned meat of any kind since I was a kid. That
canned ham is nuts when it comes to salt.

than there are people on this planet.

If that's true (and they probably got that "fact" from Hormel's PR
flack), it doesn't mean all those billions of cans were consumed. The
U.S. Army used to buy the stuff for the troops. They probably still
have a couple billion cans stored in warehouses, "just in case" they
ever need 'em.

Why of course, that they sell billions of cans of Spam in no way
indicates that people are actually eating them, they are, as you
imply, simply storing them probably in the Hawaiian Islands for
contingency, such as fooling ABC News. How clever of you
to have discovered the ABC News/Hormel conspiracy. God,
we are fortunate to have you here mouthing incontrovertable truths
and not ...er... spamming this newsgroup with utter nonsence.

As an aside, did you know somebody recently called you an idiot? That
probably surprises you, what with the amazing perspicacity that
informs your every thought.

Vegemite has gone past 1 billion jars sold. Lower than the world's population,
but pretty impressive considering the small market and how many Vegemite
sandwiches you get per jar.

I get an infinite number of sandwiches per jar of Vegimite/Marmite.

You and me both. My God, I'll never understand that stuff.

Spam, on the other, I fancied for approximately one year during my teens. I'll take ham now, thanks.

I prefer it cold, and I buy spam light. Mostly I like to nibble it, with
crackers and cheese. Just made a sandwich on bread with brown mustard and
Swiss cheese.

I ate it when I was a carnivore, not so much as vegetarian. Vegetarian spam
tastes pretty bad.

There is a reason vegetarians shouldn't try to eat things that are
fabricated to taste like meat. It's not *meat*.

You should. But be warned that it's one of those things--you either like
it or you don't. There's no in between. Personally, I like Spam!

Funny (to me)... I hadn't tried Spam in like 15-20 years until about a
couple of months ago when Bryan went on a rant about how evil it was. I
bought a can the next grocery trip just to try it again (and as a personal
protest to Bryan's comments.)

I actually liked it and so much that I bought another can the following
week. I now have one can of the stuff in my cabinet for whenever...maybe
even later today.

Once in a while, and only in the warm seasons, I treat myself with a "spam"
sandwich. I used the quotes because it's not pork spam it's beef, but it's
very similar: it comes in a can, it can be ate both cold or hot and lasts
for ages. Lots of lettuce, a can of beef spam (simmenthal brand) which I
quickly shred and a rich cover-up of mayo, all in ciabatta bread. Cold as it
is it's perfect for summer evenings

I had a friend who would use a fork to shred/mash a can of SPAM, the add
mayo, minced onion, sweet relish and shredded cheese. Spread it on
bread and broiled until the cheese melted.

It wasn't terrible, but I've never felt the desire to make it myself.

We always considered Spam to be a treat when we were growing up, no
joke. It's no worse than some of the stuff they try to pass off as
ham at grocery store deli counters.

Um, Treat is a similar but different product.
