Well, I did okay at this year's State Fair.

In spades!!

Eight blue ribbons: Blackberry jelly, Crab apple jelly, Peach jam, Boozy
Floozy Peach Amaretto Jam, PICKLED BOILED DIRT CHUNKS!!, Watermelon
pickles, Stewed tomatoes, Tomato juice;

Two red ribbons: Plum jelly, Raspberry jelly

Four white ribbons: Strawberry jelly, Blackberry jam, Nectarine jam,
Apricot butter

One pink ribbon: Cherry jam

I believe those awards are sufficient to garner the award for being the
best (at least most prolific) canner at this year's GREAT MINNESOTA
GET-TOGETHER!! You should go!!

Let us be the judge of that. I'll take a jar of dirt chunks off your
hands, as well as some of that lowly cherry jam.

Congratulations, Barb!
Have you convinced the DH to add a room on the back to house a
proper display area for all your ribbons?

ADD ME! Congrats Barb from me too.

To the others here - notice how most or all of "Melba's Jammin'" ribbons and
awards are mostly or all from HIGH CARB food! horrors!

Lord, no! I don't even know where most of them are ‹ I've got the first
15-20 years worth in an expanding file thing somewhere. <shrug> My
success this year was a huge surprise ‹ I have a serious family thing
going on and I've been distracted, tired, and busy. The canning has
been a blessing ‹ it has provided activity for which I have a tangible
result when I'm done. I am grateful for that.

Limited quantities, I'm not cheap, and shipping is expensive. <shrug>
And I only made about 4 pints of those disgusting beets ‹ they are
expensive to make, time consuming to prep, and a PITA AFAIC.

I don't display them. The first 15-20 years worth are in an expanding
file folder in a closet somewhere. . . .

I keep the medallions and my pearls (June Cleaver lives!!) on a
shelf/rack in the kitchen/dining area where they are handy to grab when
I do any media/promotional stuff on behalf of the Fair.

I'm not very organized.

Thanks, Nancy. They had about 50 more jars entered this year than last.
I am always most pleased if I do well in a large lot ‹ my tomato jam
placed second a couple times in the miscellaneous lot that gets maybe
45-55 entries. This year my Boozy Floozy Peach Amaretto Jam won the
blue ribbon ‹ it was judged better than the other **65** jars entered.
Yeah, that tickles me.

Says the woman who spent hundreds of hours in a steaming hot kitchen
prepping, jamming, BWB-ing many dozens of jars of fruit jam, jelly,
preserves, etc. while dealing with a sibling's serious illness.
I keep telling you, B, everyone has limits, but you haven't found
your yet.

Well done, lady. You are amazing.

I have yet to go to a state fair or even a 4H fair where foods were
judged for being low-carb.

It was the feeblest sort of complement, I wasn't thinking of trying to
get something for nothing, honest. (I was only thinking vaguely of
things you could bear to part with.)

It is that, Jill. The most blue ribbons I've ever had in one year, they
make for about 110. (Modesty doesn't become me.) '-)

Thank you. They did not, but I had a nice note from the head of their
test kitchen (they printed my bread and butter pickle recipe without
attribution in the online version of the magazine). And I sent Michael
Stern the list, too. And Penny de los Santos. :-0)

Follow the directions on the pectin leaflet. That's what I do. Mostly.

Thanks. It's fun. I've had a wicked several months due to a killer
illness in a family member and the canning has been something tangible
to show for the time and effort involved. Doesn't taste bad, either.

LOL!! Yeah, sugar is an integral part of making jellies and jams. Part
of the friendly handshake required between the fruit, sugar, pectin, and
acid.

No offense taken. I can bear to part with all of it €” but I'm not cheap
and shipping is expensive. A high school classmate insisted on by B&B
pickles last year €” shipping was just about equal to the cost of the
pickles. I did everything I could to discourage her, but she persisted.

They do. It's a different department than the one in which I compete,
but they do indeed have awards for sausage. Seems like those are for
commercial operations, though.

Thanks, O. It was good to have something tangible to show for my work.

When you come back to NYC, I promise not to allow the word "legal"
enter into anything.

We are SO not worthy! But you knew that. I figured there was something
going on, since I'd seen fewer posts from you of late. Having an outlet
helps ease stress.

OB Food/Cooking chez us: The city is doing too good a job of eradicating
the invasive (but tasty) Himalayan blackberries this year. I had to
cover a lot of territory to get a sufficient quantity for cereal and a
blackberry chipotle sauce that was printed in Sunday's Seattle Times. I
grilled a pork tenderloin to serve underneath the sauce. SO said it
needed more balsamic and less cumin.

And it is official. I received a phone call yesterday afternoon
informing me of the award for having more success this year than any
other canner. It is the fifth time I have received the award. Yeay!
