A potato recipe called for some. I just squeezed a bit of juice from my horseradish, leaving the remainder pretty dried out.

When I was in my teens and 20s I drank a small can of sauerkraut juice a few times a week. I'm sure it was full of salt but it seemed to help shock hangovers from drinking out of my system. I remember them only from one brand called Kesters of Keeters or something like that - a small hard yellow can that came with no pull-top. I enjoyed the stuff straight and even if might have been loaded with salt, the size of the can seemed almost perfect for a quick jolt, a six ounce can I believe. I'm in NC the last 17 years and can't recall having seen it but I believe it's still around. From memory I'd say that pickle juice probably comes closest to the kraut juice in flavor and tang. But I liked the kraut stuff. TJ |

My dad used to buy Frank's Kraut Juice, still available although the new Ohio owner closed the Franksville, Wis. factory. http://fsb.elsstore.com/view/categor...s-kraut-juice/ |

I said in my post that I haven't seen it down here but I remember now that I did see some once but it was in a larger sized glass jar I didn't want to invest in. I suppose I may have liked the small yellow single-shooter can as much as the juice itself. I remember now looking and even asking for kraut juice at a store down here, a whole foods I believe, and being directed to the larger sized jar and figuring I didn't want it bad enough to buy the whole thing. Give me my can, I've got to have my can or I'm just gonna flip out man, TJ |

Sauerkraut juice is widely available here in Germany, in health shops and in some supermarkets, in bottles and in TetraPaks. One has to read the ingredient list, to make sure it is pure sauerkraut juice, with maybe some salt added, not also apple juice, as in some brands. I have a bottle of Voelkel brand sauerkraut juice here. BTW, your posts are not wrapping and do not conform to the Usenet standard of a maximum of 80 characters per line (with 72 recommended, to allow for nested quoting). The rec.food.cooking newsgroup is Usenet - it is not anything "Google". If I were you, I'd stop using broken Google Groups and start using something actually usable - not just for you, but also for the readers of your posts. Victor |

Kalmia used horseradish juice vs sauerkraut juice. That would be quite a bit of a difference, imo. G. |

Yeah, they probably came in six pack but this was back in the days when they sold more singles off the shelves or even take a single from a six pack if you wanted. I'm not living in the past (am I?) - (just asking proves I'm not) - but those are nice memories of being able to go into a convenience store and buy a single item such as a Good Humor cherry popsicle for a nickel. I wouldn't care if they cost 50 cents today, it would be nice to see singles of those in stores. TJ |

I can buy bottled kraut juice at my food co-op. But how would you get kraut juice from horseradish? "It's a murrcle!" '-)" -- Barb, http://www.barbschaller.com, as of June 6, 2012 |
