The recent thread about Thermapen got me interested in them. In use,
they seem to be a nice item, but the price is a bit steep. I was looking for an item on Amazon and saw the Taylor Five Star 9867FDA model that looks very much the same at half the price. I ordered one. I've used it a half dozen times now. The best feature is the speed. It does not replace the probe type units for checking on a roast or things in the smoker, but the thin probe and fast response make it easier to check on the grill items like steaks and sausages. Sure, I've cooked for decades without one, but it is a nice tool to have. And at a better price than the other brand. Yes, it is made in China. |

I enjoyed your thread in a selfish way as I played a game with my own brain of trying to figure out what you were talking about exactly. At first from the title I thought it might be a boxing match or some other sporting event, or maybe some kind of competitive chef program on tv. Then as I read along I thought it might be a blender or food processor. Finally I found out what you were talking about and read on till the end where you came to the made in China part. At that I thought, so what? - the Chinese have been making lots of good stuff for years. I remember even decades ago buy khakis I thought was spectacular and made in China. What a bum rap. I can see it now, someone buying something and not liking it, then looking at the label hoping to see a "made in China" logo on it so they can fix the blame on something other than their own taste and shopping prowess. The Thermapen is not made in China. Some people get hung up on that sort of stuff. I don't. |

Ok, but you did mention it, sorry I didn't know exactly why. I just think it's a bad rap. Everyone in the world is good at producing something. And I wasn't saying you were hung up on it anyway, although I was responding to your words. When I was in my 20s and heard all the carping about things being made in other countries, I was young and dumb enough to go along with it. But I have since learned that it's just one more on the long and endless list of political 'issues' designed to get people to vote. Walk into a New Balance shoe store and one of the first things out of the salesman's mouth is, "And our shoes are all made in the United States." Ok, good enough, but the quality of their shoes is no better than those made elsewhere and is also greatly over priced. American, the proud producers of capitalism, suddenly all against it when they find other countries do it just as well. TJ |
