I have to have a second surgery to relieve some more pressure on nerves
in my back that's caused my left leg/foot to continue to be paralyzed. This so sucks but at least the problem showed up on a CT scan rather than my surgeon being unable to figure out the problem. |

Well damn. Hopefully it won't be extensive or too painful. When do you go in? |

What a bummer. I hope the second surgery and recovery go smoothly, and that the paralysis disappears. -- Jean B. |

Good luck and I hope you have a full recovery. When I began experiencing severe back pain some 20 years ago surgery seemed to be the soup of the day. The two Orthopedic surgeons I went to just wanted to cut, that's what surgeons do. I consulted with the doctor at my work and was advised to see a Neurologist and one was recommended. New CT scans were done and I was told that surgery wouldn't help and would lead to more surgery that would eventually put me in a wheel chair. I went through a short course of physical therapy that didn't help at all. Finally I had the shots, three sessions over three months. After the first two sessions nothing, no effect and I was about to give up, but the morning after the third session the pain was totally gone and still. I still have two herniated disks, spinal stenosis, and arthitis deposits, but no pain. My instructions are no heavy lifting, no twisting, no reaching up high. It works. I take no pain meds either. If the pain comes back I will have the shots again, and they are totally painless, don't even feel the needle. |

If you can, try not to dread it so much. Try to see it as a coming relief and new beginnings and look forward to it instead of fearing it. Dread and fear actually retards healing. It actually changes your body chemistry. If you can lose the fear and gain anticipation, your recovery will be faster and you will be healthier. Use the technique of visualization. Visualize how simple and easy the procedure will be, see how fast you will be on your feet and feeling good. Try to actually FEEL the strength and flexibility of your limbs and the strength of your muscles. See yourself in perfect health and form. Do a little meditation/visualization session as often as you can. The medical community has found that this really does produce great results. So try it, and remember that We are all here supporting you. |

You probably need that left leg and foot, though. Don't worry about your coworkers, they will get over it. I will be thinking positive thoughts on the 6th. Becca |

The first one helped, the second didn't. I've done Pt - no help there at all. I think I've tried everything which is why it led to surgery. Surgery is the only thing that can repair this now. |

It will be a shorter surgery than the one with the screws and rods and at least those don't have to be moved during this surgery. It's just to clean up some bone where the nerve roots are still being compressed. |

Yep, life is easier with that leg and foot but right now I want to cut them off. Thanks for the positive thoughts. |

This will sound silly but I just want to do regular things again that cause too much pain, like grocery shopping, regular shopping, and I want to be able to plan for outings where I don't have to make sure there's somewhere to sit every 10 minutes, and I don't want to hold everyone up because they have to wait for my back to not be feeling like it's on fire when I walk. I haven't stepped foot in a regular store like a mall in years. Amazon.com is where all of my shopping is done. |
