Last half hour that I can eat until probably Friday and I haven't had
dinner and not even hungry. I hope this surgery works this time. I also have to ask if the surgeon is going to be cutting into the scar that was left from the first surgery if it's going to take longer to heal. I'm scared and excited all at the same time because at this point I can't walk without a walker. Wish me luck and I'd love any prayers you have to spare if you believe in such things. |

Don't fear. Keep that excitement, the excitement will promote a good outcome, the fear will prevent one. If you feel any fear, take deep breaths, relax your shoulders and body, close your eyes and visualize the outcome you desire. Know in your heart that you are powerful enough to bring that outcome about. I'm keeping good thoughts coming your way. You will do splendidly, I know it. |

Ths surgery didn't seem to work at all. The affected numb/painful foot that didn't have thi problem before surgerey is still numb/painful. Whenever I call the surgeons office they go into some discussion about additional pain meds will have to be handled through a pain management specialist even if i just ask how long my foot/leg will still be unusable. i haven't even talked to the surgeon since just before release on friday. there is no doubt this is neurological in nature since it wasn;t like ths before the first surgery. sorry i cant type well laying in bed which ive been doig since i got home. surgeon is suppoosed to call me tomorrow and i'm supposed to have an at home PT assessnent too. 2 surgeries and i don't feel any improvement. am i looking for something too soon? |

Way too many people with back problems want instant results so opt for surgery, a big mistake. I'm very glad I heeded a second opinion and cancelled my back surgery. I've since been told by several doctors (not surgeons) that once one has back surgery they will need many surgeries until they are a cripple in a wheelchair. I think you ought to try the injections again, but a different doctor. The first place where I had injections I got zero results, so I went to a different group of doctors and it's now been five years and I'm pain free... there were three doctors, each time a different doctor administered the shot... I suppose they each used a different cocktail and a different technique, all I know is that it worked. After a few months I returned hundreds of pain pills to the pharmacy to dispose of. Good luck. |

Means a lot to me. ![]() much encouragement from my surgeon but the PT assessment was very informative. She said the nerves are damaged and likely will heal with time. I don't know exactly what it all means but swelling is still causing the numbness in my leg and foot but I can actually feel improvement! Only 2 spots with pain, the rest just pins and needles. Before surgery 2 it was just all pain. She said I was walking ok, but if any of the nerve damage is permanent (small chance of that) I will have to relearn some things, like walking. This is worst case scenario so I will just go with the flow and do the PT as directed and see where it goes. Thanks again. |

That is VERY encouraging. Just take it easy and don't try to will yourself well all at once. The body is a miraculous thing, it will heal if we let it go at it's own pace and treat it gently. |

Cheryl, I feel terrible about this, you have been through so much already. It is too bad the surgeon is so non communicative. Becca |

Sheldon, BTW, this was one of the diagnosis that caused the need for surgery. Since one vertebrae slipped under another one, and PT wasn't working to move it back into place, fusion was the only option other than just numbing the pain with sterioids. And yes, permanent nerve damage can be a result, and possible future surgeries, but at 49 we saw no reason not to do the surgery so I can at least have some quality of life. I literally wasn't able to walk but for short distances. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmedhealth/PMH0002240/ |

Bad enough I'm sure you're sick of being laid up. I hope you're up and about soon. nancy |

The doctors I went to also perform surgery but they insisted I go other routes first with surgery as a last resort. I don't know where you live but this is where I was treated, it's quite a facility, it may be a possibility for you. http://www.capitalregionspecialsurge.../neurosurgery/ At 49 you're a young chick, much too young to give up... I have shoes in my closet older than you, and their tongues are still supple! LOL |

LOL Though I talked to my boss and he gave me a lot of assignments, mostly research and writing about some new technology we're moving to, and which he wants to understand better, so that's work I can easily do being laid up. I'm glad they've been so understanding. |
