Most of Hawaiian humor is about the cultural differences between the races. What I don't care for is that 70's kind of TV humor. It's just so corny. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=el84efC10oE |

The best and least corny comedy is Curb Your Enthusiasm, IMO. They were too out of touch with the real > world to understand that Archie's racism was being ridiculed. It wasn't being ridiculed, it was just one of the many issues of the times being brought to life on the screen when other productions considered them "Don't Even Go There". And the producers and writers did it well. Edith got raped, Michall was vegetarian, Archie got robbed, Michael cheated on Gloria, Vietnam war, and whole slew of other touchy subjects integrated, often comically, into a beloved comedy series of the times. And I'm sick of people overusing the word racist. Archie was a prejudiced bigot - he didn't genuinely hate blacks or spics, he just feared them. George, OTOH, he was a racist ****er. He genuinely hated White people. But it's commonly overlooked being called a racist since he's black and he had more leeway. And the scripting was done well to show that double-standard that blew over the heads of most people. The common misconception that "blacks can't be racist" is bullshit. I hate to break it some of you - there ARE plenty of black racists, and they are just as much fueling the issue as the worst of the Whites. You can't be out calling people racists when you regularly practice and advertise the same ideals yourself. It just feeds the problem. ObFood: Sqwertz's Saucy Spheres -sw |

I encountered a number of black people who were racists when I lived in Tennessee (Memphis). In the 1990's there was an older woman named Pinkie who worked at the breakfast/lunch counter at McLemore's market who was downright rude to me all the time. Her co-worker Louanne (also black) was not. One day I made a batch of red beans and rice with andouille sausage and took a tupperware container of it to Louanne. (I figured she must get terribly tired of eating the same stuff they cooked for lunch every day.) She loved it! After I dropped it off, Miss Pinkie, as she was called, just had to taste it. Louanne told me later Pinkie exclaimed "Dis shit is GOOD!" After that, Pinkie was nice as can be to me. Funny how that works. There was another time, back in the 1980's, I went to Target with Michelle, who was light-skinned black woman on our lunch break so she could buy an alarm clock. We stopped at the lunch counter to grab a bite to eat. The black woman behind the counter took Michelle's order then literally turned her back and pointedly ignored me. Michelle looked at me, then she said, "Excuse me! Aren't you going to take my sisters' order?" LOL Watching that woman stammer and stumble through an apology was almost comical. Michelle asked me when we sat down to eat, "Does that happen a lot?" Sadly, yes. I have yet to encounter any negative or nasty attitudes from black people in this part of South Carolina. It's quite refreshing! Who knows, maybe some of them are smiling while thinking to themselves "I hate white people" but you'd never know it and I don't believe they actually feel that way. It's a 180° difference. Jill |

It happens even here. I never had much exposure to black people as a kid because there just weren't any where I lived. I used to occasionally see a black person when we drove through Toronto to go to my grandparents' house. I saw maybe 10-12 total. There is some sort of revisionist notion that black slavery was a significant part of our past here. The fact is a few Loyalists came up from the US during and after the revolution. My understanding was that it was a small number, but the revisionists are making claims of numbers many times higher than I had read in the past. Now we have a significant black population, most of which are immigrants from the Caribbean. A lot of them have a chip on their shoulder about slavery, though the slavery of their ancestors several generations happened in their home country. If you want to see real racism, go to an Indian reserve. You are guaranteed to hear a rant about residential schools and how you stole their land. |

There is no doubt that more ships appear to have sailed to the Caribbean and Brazil than to the US. Brazil accounted for 40% of all the slaves shipped over from Africa. I watched it twice and didn't notice any of those ships sailing to Canada. That is pretty much in line with what I had read about Canadian slavery years ago. There had been two ship loads of Africans brought over to New France in an experiment with slavery. It didn't take. Perhaps the west put the blame on the US because it maintained the institution for years after others had abolished it. There could be an element of ignorance to that since so many people are unaware of the extent of slavery in Brazil. |

Despite all the rhetoric, I refuse to feel "guilty" or take any sort of blame for something that happened centuries before I was born. I have no idea whether or not the first McQuown's who arrived in the US in 1680 forced "Indians" off their land in Pennsylvania. They were given a land grant by William Penn. I don't know if there were still natives living there or not. Maybe they lived side by side in harmony. I wasn't there. I do know none of my ancesors owned slaves of any race. The McQuown's were caught up in a religious war back in Scotland and were captured and transported as indentured servants. It was pure luck the captain of the ship died and the man who assumed command was friendly towards the Scots. He dropped them off in Amboy, NJ, rather than handing them over to plantation owners in Virginia. It bugs me that people try to tar all white people with the same brush. It simply isn't true. Jill |
