Default eggplant

How do you know when to pick it? Got one about 6 inches, dark purple. This
year staked it so worms didn't crawl in.

The eggplant should be firm, the color deep and shiny. If the color
begins to fade, it is already past prime.

Size has little to do with eggplant ripeness unless you know which
variety... there are many varieties of eggplant, many different
sizes/shapes... read the seed packet. But usually one can tell
ripeness by feel, should be firm but give a bit when pressed with a
finger but should spring right back... like nubile bosoms.
