There's also "Honey"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=59BZxgohr9g

(There's a lilac "tree" she planted in the back yard... It's about 2.5
inches tall now. It was 1.5 inches tall when she bought it.)

I don't know the song you posted... listening.

Another one: Forever Autumn... Wanted to walk with her in college,
crunching leaves, go to the peninsula. Watch the sunset over the lake...
We both loved The Moodies... She framed a copy of the prelude to Nights in
White in Night Satin. Gave it to me on christmas... She also knitted me a
bookmark once: "To live, is to be confused." (I told her that once.) She
likes knitting, and booking... Had about 20 boxes of them.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vQ7yfHuMFEc

I can't think of it... ' booking. Not face booking or cook booking (though
she also had a ton of those)... clip booking sounds close, but that's not
it.

The Band Played Waltzing Matilda does it for me--
[with lyrics]
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FqU8187oyko

The fourth verse is a universal truth-
xxxxxxxx
So they collected the crippled, the wounded, the maimed
And they shipped us back home to Australia
The armless, the legless, the blind, the insane
Those proud wounded heroes of Suvla
And as our ship pulled into Circular Quay
I looked at the place where my legs used to be
And thank Christ there was nobody waiting for me
To grieve and to mourn and to pity
And the band played Waltzing Matilda
As they carried us down the gangway
But nobody cheered, they just stood and stared
Then turned all their faces away
xxxxxxx

Oh, here's one:

Your Long Journey/Your Lone Journey. The Plant-Harris version is
much better, IMO, but I can't find it online, alas.

Maybe this one is slightly better?

Still not as good as ELH-RP.

Cat's Cradle is up there, but a far less known song would be my candidate, Joy Divisions, *New Dawn Fades*.
----------------------------------------
A change of speed, a change of style.
A change of scene, with no regrets,
A chance to watch, admire the distance,
Still occupied, though you forget.
Different colours, different shades,
Over each mistakes were made.
I took the blame.
Directionless so plain to see,
A loaded gun won't set you free.
So you say.

We'll share a drink and step outside,
An angry voice and one who cried,
'we'll give you everything and more,
The strain's too much, can't take much more.'
Oh, I've walked on water, run through fire,
Can't seem to feel it anymore.
It was me, waiting for me,
Hoping for something more,
Me, seeing me this time, hoping for something else.
----------------------------------

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GqUFbd8aAN0

Some songs that are sad have some hope, even if it's just in the music; Paint It Black, Sound of Silence, etc. have some potential for renewal, but New Dawn Fades is a dead end, unadulterated despair. I might be prejudiced by the fact that the song is the culmination of an A-Side that is an obvious descent into suicide. The album, Unknown Pleasures, is the darkest ever released.

But nothing could come close to Transformer. John Kuthe and I saw Lou
in the late '70s. He was having a bad night, and twice kicked a
monitor into the orchestra pit, and waited for the sound folks to put
them back on the stage, bitching about the sound. Still, the show was
great, but it was because Ian Dury and the Blockheads opened. They
were terrific. They were touring the album, New Boots and Panties,
one of the great oldschool punk albums, the one that featured Sex and
Drugs and Rock and Roll and Sweet Gene Vincent
