![]() They just get more expensive all the time. Very annoying. Also, in my experience, the shell makes up half the weight. I find the only way, usually, to get cheap walnuts is to wait until after Christmas and buy them in the shell, from the discount produce rack. Sure, it's a pain to shell them, but not nearly as much as doing that with pecans! Unless your time is super-precious, I find it's worthwhile to do that instead of waiting for a sale on shelled walnuts that may never come. Anyway, what are YOUR sources/methods for getting cheap walnuts if you live in the city? Thanks. Lenona. P.S. If you EVER have a moth problem, don't forget to put the walnuts in the freezer even BEFORE you shell them - you never know just how long you're going to delay using them, after all. |

Thanks. Walnuts are a seasonal crop, price varies by time of year and size/quality of harvest. Buying in-shell walnuts in bulk is the least expensive method and this is the time of year when walnuts are harvested so prices are lowest. Check if there's a walnut farm nearby and buy at the source. But if all you want is a couple three pounds just buy from your stupidmarket. |

I checked many websites that sell walnuts and they all averaged about $9/lb. http://www.nuts.com/nuts/walnuts/ |

If you have a Bartel's in your area, they sometimes have really good sales on 2# bags. Trader Joe's also might be a good place to look. |

My grandma had 2 or 3 trees, and I remember her cracking them for hours to make perfect halves for her sugared walnuts that she gave as gifts for the holidays ========= Yes, we are lucky. They have several acres of walnuts and they sell theirs to Diamond Walnut who processes them and then they keep so many bags of the shelled walnuts for themselves. I remember as a kid my mom would put all of us to nut cracking before the holidays. I hated it then, but good memories now. :-) Cheri |

However, I tend to find that ANY modestly sized grocery store seldom has good deals on foods that get sold everywhere - as opposed to, say, Turkish Delight. Though I remember some great sales on milk and eggs at (only) two convenience stores outside of Boston. Those sales are long gone, though. Lenona. |

"Pretty cheap" is not a price, and at those small stores quality is iffy. This is the best price I've found: http://www.amazon.com/In-Shell-Jumbo...lnuts+in+shell |

Walnuts go rancid fairly quickly, far more quickly than pecans, and that's because walnuts are high in polyunsaturated fats, whereas pecans are high in monounsaturates. Health-wise, pecans are a far better choice. IMO, the most delicious alternative is hickory nuts, but those are *really* expensive. http://www.rayshickorynuts.com/contact.html for shelled. http://www.hickorynutsfarm.com/ for in the shell. If you've ever tried shelling hickory nuts, you'd understand why they are so pricey shelled. I can only imagine how much more expensive they'd get if some of the famous chef's started using them. If you've never tasted a hickory nut, I'd compare the taste by an analogy: Hickory nut : pecan nut :: tame duck : wild duck. > > nancy --Bryan |

I get a bag of pecans and almonds there, too. We vac pack baggies and stash them in the freezer. They are not just fabulous for baking and candy-making, but knowing they are around encourages me to use them in other cooking, too, such as dressing up a pilaf or veggie dish or sprinkling some on a salad.
