That looks good! I'm going to try a new recipe for black bean soup when I
get home, but I am going to add some jalapenos to it. It doesn't call for
those and oddly enough doesn't call for tomatoes either. I am going to add
fresh chopped tomatoes, onions and cilantro when I serve it because I love
those things. Whole pot will be just for me! I will try to get daughter to
taste it but she doesn't like soup very much.

For black bean soup start by browning a couple three pork chops in
your pot. Add onions, garlic, and Penzeys adobo but no tomatoes.
Serve with lime wedges. I'd serve jalapenos as a garnish for those
who desire heat. Your daughter may like it if you omit the hot
peppers... it's very easy for those who want heat to add their own.
Btw, my pea soup is still asimmer, been cooking for over eight hours.
Has two big very meaty ham bones, four pounds split peas, four onions,
three pounds potatos, a whole bunch celery, one pound carrots, black
pepper to taste, four large bay leaves, two cloves garlic, few sprigs
parsley, three envlopes Goya chicken bouillion, water of course.
Before I go to bed I'll put the pot out on my deck to cool over night,
early tomorrow morning I'll ladle most into containers to freeze, I'll
leave enough for lunch tomorrow.

A good project for a 16 quart pot.

Especially since you've cited the ingredients, I know that beautiful
soup is very good and tasty. Yesterday my 16-quart was all but filled
with sauce & meatballs to simmer for about four hours, then I added
the pasta. The sauce was not perfect enough for me to miss having any
leftovers, so I sent the mess of not enough rich, deep, dark tomato
flavored spaghetti home with my friend to feed her four-adults family
with. (I do that weekly for this money struggling family.)

Last week the pot was filled with extremely good chicken soup, the
week before it was a rich beef stew. Those two I did keep four
portions of each to freeze for my own later havings. After my
Christmas baking and candy making expenses are through, I'll be
contacting a Tupperware dealer to buy more of the freezer containers I
prefer for single portion freezing because I only have about a dozen
now.

Sheldon, our 16-quarters are perfect for how we like to cook big
amounts, hey!
....Picky&BB miss you.

I also like my 16 qt pot because it's squat enough to fit on the
bottom shelf of my fridge without having to move/remove the shelf
above. I have an 18 qt stockpot but it's much too tall to fit in my
fridge.

Looks really good! I've got some split peas in the pantry. But the title
of the post makes me think of this song:

Tennessee Ernie Ford, 16 tons and what do you get? Another day older and
deeper in debt. LOL

Didja put in some bacon?

My late sister-in-law always ranted how she couldn't understand why
ppl liked split pea soup. BORING! I served her some of mine. BINGO!
I always use chicken stock instead of plain water. But, the kicker is
bacon bits, good bacon fried up crispy and tossed in. She even began
making her own.

I can remember walking to school with a friend, passing the Mead
Public Library, and we were already almost hoarse from singing that
song over and over and . . .

Your pea soup looks very tasty. My largest pot is 8 qt. That's big enough
for me only plus not a big freezer. Time for me to make some more vegetable
soup but I'm waiting for some cold weather so I can cool the pot outside
like you do. Still way too warm here in Virginia.

I used two very meaty ham bones. I really don't care for bacon.
If I don't have ham bones I buy smoked ham hocks. To me bacon tastes
artificially smoked.

Still not very cold here, only drops to about 50º at night, but still
better than putting a hot pot that size directly in the fridge. I
left it out on my deck until just before getting into bed and it was
still tepid. I don't like to leave a pot out on my deck over night as
there's a good chance some critter will knock it over. When winter
sets in and it's well below freezing I put the pot into my garage to
cool, it's safe from critters in there, but still I have to leave
enough time for it to cool and for me to still be awake to put it in
the fridge or left over night it'll freeze solid. In my garage there
can still be critters but nothing bigger than a mouse and they can't
lift the pot lid. This is the time of year mice sneak in. The past
two days one was hiding in the baseboard heat in my kitchen. It kept
my cats very busy all night, they didn't even sleep or eat. Finally I
took the front cover off the baseboard and got my Dyson, sucked it
right up and let it loose outdoors, the mouse wasn't hurt, never knew
what happened... must've thought it was in one of those sci fi
transporters. For the past week I've been inundated with ladybugs,
been sucking them up too and releasing them outdoors.
