I bought a beef shank in the used meat bin for $1.25. Since it was a
fuzz under a pound I decided to maximize it and make a small pot of
chile. While the meat simmered I made Squeak's, Grandmother's
Buttermilk Biscuits.
I'd say I ate pretty darned well today.

Here's what I did.

I'd have left out the coriander from your otherwise great version of
chile. That stuff is nasty enough raw, but worse cooked.

So often, coriander and/or scallions spoil a good recipe.

My sister brought over some Goulash Sunday, but I didn't get a chance to
eat it until Monday. OMG. !! Great.

But that's only *your* opinion, Bryan. I love both, often double the
amounts called for in a recipe or add them even if they are not called
for (if I think it's appropriate).

Ummmmmm, wouldn't that be the marked down meat bin? Used meat bin
sounds like someone has already cooked it, didn't like it, returned
it, and then you bought it.

That being said there are some great values to be found in that bin,
at least there are in my store.

It would be nice if you could get her goulash recipe and share it with
us. My Aunt Reba made wonderful goulash, but she passed away and I
never got her recipe.

Rather than try to remember all, I found one similar, except don't use
caraway seeds or peppers. She also added McCormick stew mix, and of course
dumplings are added after making it when served. Also, some lawrys
seasoning salt instead of one used in recipe.

If only I could get my grandmothers chicken and dumpling recipe !!!

I'll give it a try. Mostly potatoes and beef. I liked my mothers, but
sisters really hit the spot that day. It is a soup. Some recipes are more
stew.

Thanks for the link. Goulash at my Aunt Reba's was the best comfort food.

Is there a suitable substitute for Vegeta or does vegetable stock
work?

I already gave subs above, unless you want salt and MSG, then use vegeta.
We also use lawrys in our chicken soup.. I see some recipes calling for
more paprika, 2 or more tbs. Lawrys does have some paprika, and salt.
Vegeta 56% salt. I don't know, maybe some V8 for veggies.
a little mrs dash saltless can be added to most things.

Not knowing wtf vegeta is, I thought it was more like a bullion. Hate
Lawrys and had no clue it was supposed to be a substitute for that
stuff. I guess I won't try the recipe after all. Doesn't sound very
good to me.

West Coast here and nobody I know in real life uses that term either.
