Mom, in her dimished capacity, occasionally turns on the microwave w/o
putting anything in it. That's a no-no. She did it again and this time it killed it. That's two dead m/w's in the last yr. (sigh) I could get along jes fine w/o one, but they can be handy, specially for herXCy. The only thing that's definitely gonna crimp my style is drinking my morning coffee. The m/w is perfect for rewarming it and it more often than not goes cold while I'm typing up a storm every morning answering emails and irc posts, forums, etc. I've looked a long and hard for a coffee cup that will keep coffee truly hot/warm for at least 30-40 mins. I'm beginning to think there is no such animal. Fortunately, m/w's are now dirt cheap. You can get one at WW fer $50. nb -- Definition of objectivism: "Eff you! Less, I got a MW at walmart for like $42 with tax, it's dedicated in my shed for heating chemicals on my anodizing line. "Real" anodizing lines use tank heaters, but for a small occasional use line microwaving each small tank works well. At normal indoor temps I would expect most any travel mug would keep coffee warm for a good while. One of the small stainless vacuum flasks would do the job for at least a couple hours. They did and probably still do make little warming plates for you to keep any standard ceramic mug on. |

I put instant coffee into microwave at least once, forgetting to add water. It still works. Greg |

The work well enough for reheating lunches and frozen dinners. Powerful too. A suggestion for the OP. Can you keep a cup of water in it when not in use? If mom hits the buttons, there is something to be heated. |

The beverage warmer I saw is also a 4-port USB hub, so it serves two functions. Thanks for the idea! ![]() -- Food is an important part of a balanced diet. |

I use mine for reheating leftovers, coffee, and pre-cooked frozen things. The only thing I actually cook in mine is microwaved potatoes. I guess it depends on what you use your microwave for. I have no need for a fancy one. Gary |

If mom hits the buttons, there is something to be heated. ************* I was going to suggest that! It is difficult when you're dealing with someone with Alzheimer's to know what to expect. But since his mom has done this in the past I'd definitely keep a cup of water or something in the m/w. Jill |

In fact, I do check the microwave when she uses it, as I did not want to see another m/w go south (this # 5!) and I DID check this time, too. Turns out opening the door on the empty oven is apparently what triggered its demise. It was metal cups, last time. I may jes do without, as we're probably not gonna buy another one, even if I do fix most of Mom's meals, already. The m/w was the one of the last things she had some autonomy over. DOH!! ...see!? I'm yap/typing away and my fresh cuppa joe has gone cool and I can't reheat it in the m/w. grrrr.... nb -- Definition of objectivism: "Eff you! I got mine." http://www.nongmoproject.org/ |

For most users they will last for years as most people use them for heating or re-heating liquids. |

I think they even make 'em to use in a USB port, too. I'll check it out. Made a big ol breakfast, this moring. Bacon, pancakes, eggs, etc. I suddenly realized all the other things I use the microwave for, like heating syrup, melting butter, heating serving plates, etc. I managed to do all that with the stove + oven, but it was a little more hassle. I'll survive. ![]() nb -- Definition of objectivism: "Eff you! I got mine." http://www.nongmoproject.org/ |
