My wife and I went to Vermont yesterday. Nice trip even if it was
cloudy most of the time. Our first stop was The Vermont Country Store. www.vermontcountrystore.com It is quite the place to visit. They carry many interesting items, all of good quality, not cheap tourists stuff. Clothing, bath items, toy, food, all have their own sections. They carry many cheese made in Vermont, both cow's milk and goat's milk. Most available to sample and are set out in glass containers in the refrigerated display cases. They have some local bacons, maple smoked and cob smoked. I bought a package of each as well as some of the cheeses. They have all sorts of dips, jellies, salsa, and the like to taste too. Pretzels and crackers with them. By the time we left, we did not bother stopping for lunch. If that was not enough, they have two stores so Gloria wanted to visit the other one. We only spent half as much at that store. She got the smoked salmon there as well as a couple of gifts. Pretty much shopped out, we headed for Ludlow where we were spending the night. Along the roads we passed a small motel and a sign that said Grandma's Homemade PIES. Made a U turn to check it out. A nice lady makes pie from the local produce. She had some baked as well as frozen, so I bought a frozen apple and a peach. I carry a cooler in the trunk in anticipation of these things. Ludlow is a nice town of about 2000 people. Much of it was closed after the tourist season. We stayed at a Best Western and they had only 3 rooms sold for the night. We did find a nice restaurant for dinner (DJ's) and another for breakfast. They do emphasize local ingredients, a nice touch. This morning we headed for the Cabot store in Quechee. They have every Cabot cheese available both for tasting and for purchase. We bought another half dozen cheeses. At the end of the store sis the Vermont Sprits Distilling Co. Right there they make two types of vodka, Gold made from maple syrup, Silver made from whey (milk sugar). Both are smooth for sipping. Up the road a bit is Norwich, home of King Arthur Flour. This is quite the place if you are a baker or enjoy good food. They have a school, cafe, bakery and outlet store all in one building. Very neat, spotlessly clean, and items are well displayed. I never knew there were so many types of flour available. Pasta, pizza, bread, bread machine and on and on and on. They have mixes for pancakes, waffles, Belgium waffles, muffins and on and on. Of course, flavorings, sugars, pans, tools, and whatever you can think of. After shopping, we had a pastry and coffee and headed back to home. One more stop. New Hampshire Liquor Store. I went in for a bottle of Sobieski Vodka and ended up with a total of eight items. This is top notch stuff for a regular price. 1.75 liters was only 16.99. Try it next to your Grey Goose and the like and you'll be shocked and how good this is. There you have it, two days of meandering the countryside and picking up a few little culinary treats and gifts. |

The Vermont Country Store catalog is a lot of fun to browse. I'd love to see the store in person. Tara |
