I bought Camparis two weeks ago in Wg=hole Foods, and we thought they
had no flavor.

There's a reason why Chez Panisse used to use tomatoes only three weeks
out of the year. 8

Presentation can be fun, but you are 100% correct. Today, on the way home from the concert, we went by the taqueria and got a quart each of red and green. I swear, if that place ceased to exist, I would be very upset. The green was obviously made today. It was so fresh, and the red is always divine. The folks who work there probably wonder what we do with all of it.

Pity. I've never been disappointed.

Why? I can buy locally grown tomatoes for a lot longer than three weeks
in the summer.

I've never had a bad Campari either.

I get great ones from my back yard for more like 3 months. In the Winter, it's Camparis or nothing, usually nothing because of the price. In early Summer, before my own ripen, I often buy pretty good on-the-vine tomatoes from ALDI at very low prices. I don't understand the appeal of Romas, unless one is just using them as a thickening agent in something like a freshly made salsa taquera. They have very little acid, and even less flavor.

I finally solved the problem of "no taste or flavor" in the tomatoes I
use to make a tomato sandwich. I bought a can of whole peeled tomatoes
at the grocery store, cut them in half while draining all the juice
off of them, plopped them on the bread with mayonaise...tomato
sandwich heaven!
