A baking tin. 12 very shallow muffin cups-not like a cupcake pan-these
are very shallow and the sides are much more slanted than with cupcakes. I think its old. Brand stamped in metal says "Tala" and "Made in England." I paid 99cents. So not being familiar with english cooking I am wondering about scones tarts crumpets and the like. It is actually the same shape as a pie tin only miniature. It has that patina indicating frequent baking with oiled/greased cups. Interesting to buy something made in England instead of China. |

Could be for tarts, but I've seen pans like what you described for making "muffin tops." It's for people who want the top, crusty part of a muffin without the doughey, bottom part. Or I guess the top, crusty part without all the calories. I hope this helps, Ken |

Could be mine! I sent my muffin top pan to the thrift store. Seemed like a good idea when I bought it but then I never used it. |

Yup, its a tart pan-those pictures definitely match the size/shape of
the cups. I found a website that shows a round ball of dough placed in the center of the cup, and then a special wooden tamper is used to press down the dough and then jams/jellies are added and it is baked. I like this pan because it looks like it would be easy to release whatever you bake all in one piece. I am going to experiment with sugar cookie dough. |

I didn't buy one of those pans because I eat muffins for the body and the top is "meh" to me, but hearing they're good for tarts makes me think I should have. -- Food is an important part of a balanced diet. |

The Tala pan that zz is speaking about is exactly that in which we used to bake our tarts in the old days ![]() -- -- http://www.shop.helpforheroes.org.uk/ |

We are exact opposites in that regard. I love the tops and have been known to bake split muffins so as to get that nice crunch on more surface area. |

BTW, the procedure is to bake muffins upside down for a while, and then split vertically and crisp up, etc., etc. |
